Volume 14 No. 5 - Sept/Oct 1998

  A BEVY OF BRISTOLS!

Everything is 'Bristol Fashion' in this edition which features lead features on post-war Bristol Fighter markings along with a detailed build log of the 1:48 scale Aeroclub Bristol Fighter as featured on the front cover. We also take a close look at  Bristol Fighters in post-war Polish service with rare photos and three new colour profiles on the rear cover. All the regular columns are here together with Gallery in colour with some great models including a scratch-built airship and a Voisin III. On other pages we have more intimate aspects of the San Diego Fokker Eindecker reproduction in colour and monotone, plus a unique look into LVG two-seater construction in a copy of the company's 1917 catalogue-some great assembly aspects are seen. Photos of a captured French SPAD and Nieuport in German hands precede the main features and at the opposite end of the issue is Products. Among the kits under review are: 1:48 Eduard Albatros Dr.I and Nieuport 17; Flashback/AMC E.III Eindecker ; an E.V Flying Razor  in Osterkamp's bright MFJ colours and a W 29 Brandenburg seaplane. Also in 1:48 is the JMGT all-resin Pfalz E.I and in 1:72, a new Fokker Triplane from Hawkeye-also resin-and Toko's delightful Nieuport Bebe.

IT'S the Bristol F2B Fighter-the 'Biff' in wartime parlance-that takes centre-stage in this edition. Firstly, Bruce Robertson looks at post-war Bristols with photos and full RAF Stores lists tabulating all the specified airframe component finishes, then Steve Rutland presents an in-depth build/review log of the Aeroclub 1:48 scale kit of the wartime version in five highly descriptive pages including modelling stage photos and close-ups of the Hendon example. The result can be seen on the front cover... Moving on we have Fabric that showcases Bristol Fighters in Polish service with nine rare photos of typical examples in their colourful national insignia and for good measure,  three colour profiles of Polish Bristols on the back cover. Elsewhere, we offer First Principles a new limited series aimed at newcomers to WWI modelling with plenty of tips and photos to support the narrative. This one is devoted to painting and contains a good deal of helpful advice. There's a rather special Archive with facsimile copies from an original LVG company catalogue-four fascinating pages show the LVG factory floors in 1917 with aircraft in various stage of construction. In Museum News we have more intimate colour and monotone close-ups of the San Diego Eindecker as featured on the covers of WS Volume 14,No.2,showing internals and construction details and all the usual regular columns appear with readers' models in colour; Propwash; Logbook and some great period advertisements. There are five pages of kit and decal reviews including a look at new Americal/Gryphon releases as well as  some engine sets  plus a preview of the Blue Max Bristol Fighter in 1:48...
