Volume 14 No. 3 - May/June 1998
THE LAST HALBERSTADT C.V!
Among the highlights of this edition are drawings of the RNAS bomb carrier as fitted to Warneford's MoS L when he shot down Zeppelin LZ 37 over Ghent in 1915, and the unique Russian Villish VM-5 flying boat features in our 'Despatches from St Petersburg 'series edited by Harry Woodman. For this issue's plans feature we present the unusual Beardmore WB.IV with its mid fuselage Hisso powerplant and jettisonable undercarriage: 1:48 and 1:72 GAs are supported by over a dozen crisp archive images. Elsewhere, Colin Owers offers up nine monotone profiles and 14 photos showcasing the famous American trainer, the Curtiss JN.4 Jenny with examples from Love Field and Kelly Field; a USN machine and one from Argentina as well as an Ambulance conversion! We look forward to dozens of upcoming WWI models scheduled for release during 1989/1999 and we close the issue with Decor Debut concentrating on a newly-discovered Fokker D.VIII of Jasta 6. Outer covers carry eight colour images of the sole-remaining Halberstadt C.V in Belgium and Products looks at a bevy of new releases including: CSM Dornier D.I in 1:48; AMC Morane Saulnier I and Sopwith Navy Pup- also 1:48, plus Pegasus 1:72 Albatros D.I/D.II and a 'strip-down' PE/plastic Fokker D.VIII from Eduard to the same scale.
The third edition of 1998 is packed with unique and diverse material! We start with latest news and an extended Logbook which includes Alex Imrie's candid critique of our first Fokker D.VII Anthology along with drawings of the RNAS bomb carrier fitted to Rex Warneford's famous Morane Sualnier Type L. The latest St Petersburg despatches relate the history of Alexander von Villish and his VM-5 flying boat with contemporary drawings and rare archive images to support the text. This issue's plans feature details the extraordinary Beardmore WB.IV designed, but never deployed,as a ship-bourne interceptor. This eight page study includes 1:48 and 1:72 scale drawings by Ian Stair and over a dozen cracking photos of the aircraft courtesy of the JMB/GSL Collection. On other pages,Colin Owers submits four pages of photos and 10 monotone profiles depicting the classic Curtiss JN-4 Jenny offering plenty of inspiration for modellers especially those building the Glencoe kit-ex Aurora- that had been released at the time. Our second Decor Debut features another Fokker D.VIII profile and photos for a Jasta 6 example not previously illustrated. Published coincidentally with this edition was Datafile No.69 profiling the German Halberstadt C.V and the outer covers here offer colour views of the sole survivor in the Brussels Royal Army Museum. More excellent readers' models in colour and plenty of kits under review including Roland C.II from Blue Max Productions and an exquisite Sopwith Snipe in 1:72 scale from Toko: plus Blue Rider Curtiss Jenny decals and some new figures.
