Volume 13 No. 4 - July/Aug 1997
For the Summer edition we start with a revisionist look at the controversial markings of Roy Brown's iconic Camel B7270 when he attacked the Red Baron on 21 April 1918-and we all know how that turned out...We look at a rare 1920 painting that offers a clue and back this up with photos and colour drawings. There are 1922-dated photos of two wonderful hand-made HP O/400 and HP V/1500 bombers built by a London schoolboy and Colin Owers looks at the Fokker D.III in LVA service with accompanying photos and and monotone drawings. This issue's model build review is by Rod Holland who takes on the 1:48 scale Hippo resin kit and has many positives to relate-photos of an original D.I cockpit are included. On other pages we have a centre-spread of 10 unique illustrations from the an original AW FK.8 parts catalogue-these sharp photos of components reveal an awful lot of detail that coincided with our Datafile No.64 on the type published in 1997, and we continue our A-Z survey of WWI aeroplane kits in Part 21 with six highly-informative and generously illustrated pages of Fokker D.VII model kits from 1:19 scale Aurora to 1:200 Mercator with plenty of extra historical notes. In Part 32 of his French Foreign Legion series, Jon Guttman has the career of Arthur Bluethenthal of Esc Br.227 all wrapped up with photos and colour plates depicting the five colour pattern on the Breguet 14 he flew in action. This issue's Gallery colour section continues the D.VII theme with three colourful DML models of three leading Jastas. All the other usual departments appear with Logbook and an extended Propwash column and plenty of kit reviews!
