THIS superbly-illustrated treatise profiling the 1917 Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a fighter remains one of the best published monographs on this classic WWI British fighter. Despite the small format and only 28 pages, the author packs in a great deal of accurate and invaluable reference material, which includes a rare selection of photos and the author's own superlative scale drawings across the centre-folds. With detailed close-up shots; an authentic narrative and highly detailed internal fuselage details from airscrew to rudder, this modest booklet is well above the average. ONE of the finest examples of early WWI aeroplane references, aimed specifically at model-makers, was this 28 page monograph by Charles L Bourget published in 1966,the first in a planned series and which included one of the first books written by Peter M Grosz. The brainchild of World War 1 Aero Publishers, Inc. of Massachusetts,USA,the books contained some excellent drawings,sharp,detailed photos and invaluable close-ups of popular early aircraft-their SE5a title can be considered atypical.
There are over three dozen photos presented with especially-chosen airframe and cockpit images supporting the period images. Many of these are from the US Air Force Museum archives and not generally distributed in print during the 1960s. Charles Bourget has enhanced his study with super-accurate scale general arrangement drawings which, although not all the views are to constant scale, are some of the most accurate ever published of the Viper-powered SE5a with full annotated fuselage structure, cross-sections and internal details that modellers will find invaluable-these GAs have rarely been surpassed since. Our copy has been well thumbed, being in constant use for a number of SE5a models built over the years. As a consequence the binding is a little frail, with a few centre pages semi-loosened, whilst there is some fading and mild creasing.
