FRANCE'S FORMIDABLE  FLYER!

GEORGES Marie Ludovic Jules Guynemer was born in Paris on 24 December 1894 and  destined to become one of the most famous French fighter pilots of the First World War with a total victory score of 54. Dennis Hylands paints a fascinating picture of this young man's meteoric rise in his country's fledgling air service with the aid of many rare archive images, many of which appeared for the first time in ACES & AEROPLANES 2 that became one of our most popular titles and very quickly sold out. We have this one final copy, complete and in good condition with slightly yellowed outer covers and small creases on right hand corners. None of which affects the many unique period photos; the centre-spread SPAD XII colour plate and rear cover Nieuport 10 profile. There's a very detailed victory log too-with photos-that records the pilot's many successes before his death in September 1917. The name of Guynemer  shines bright in his native France even to this day and one of his original SPAD VII fighters is preserved at Le Bourget in its original carefully-preserved fabric.

ONE OF BECHEREAU'S BEST!

USED to great effect by many pilots of the Entente in WWI, the rugged SPAD 7C.1 was one of the finest fighter aeroplanes of the war and served with distinction right up to the Armistice. It was built in Britain by two manufacturers: Mann Egerton and the Bleriot & Spad Aircraft Works, as well as in Russia by Dux. Jack Bruce offers the historical background with detailed and informative captions to accompany the many excellent photos of the type spread over 26 pages. There are scale drawings in the two most popular scales along with camouflage and markings notes-these include tone drawings of four- and five-colour patterns as well as the customary colour side views on the outer covers. Our sole copy is in very good condition, notwithstanding a small strip of the front over that escaped the glossy laminate coating during printing...

FIRST-EDITION FOKKER!

WITH the first full cover painting ever to grace a DATAFILE, Brian Knight's evocative 'unkindness of ravens' makes a great opener for Peter Grosz's first title for Albatros Productions, the first of many... This rare March 1989 First Edition contains over 50 rare archive images; three pages of scale drawings; contemporary airframe sketches and three colour profile on the rear cover featuring a pair of OAW-built  Fokker D.VIIs from Jagdstaffeln 13 and 78b, along with an early 1918 production model with out-dated eiserne kreuze and a strie finish. The book has yellowed-and mellowed-with age and exhibits some creasing but it is complete in every respect. 

LAST REMAINING EDITION!

IN this rare DATAFILE Jack Bruce outlines the type's history with many archive photos and the content is further enhanced by 1:72 and 1:48 scale drawings; seven contemporary airframe sketches; complete five-colour camouflage schematic and four colour profiles by series editor Ray Rimell on outer covers. Surviving airframes are listed and there are many candid close-ups of one of these-HD.I No.75 when displayed at the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon. This Hanriot was subsequently acquired by the Vintage Aviation Ltd company in New Zealand and restored to full airworthiness. Our copy of DF12 is in near-mint condition.

 'IMPROVING' THE BREED...

THIS superbly-well-documented monograph on the BE2E biplanes was written by J M Bruce  and contains over 50 archive photos plus 28 historical close-ups of the sole surviving BE2f variant  before it went to New Zealand's TVAL operation and fully restored to airworthy condition. DATAFILE 14 also presents the reader/modeller with detailed 1:48 and 1:72 scale plans drawn by Ian Stair together with colours and markings notes to support series editor Ray Rimell's  three rear cover colour profiles. Artist Brian Knight provides his evocative, unique cover art showing one of several BE2e machines captured by German forces. 

'WILD HAWK WARNEFORD!'

EMINENT aero historian Jack Bruce has the story of the French Morane Type L 'Parasol' of 1915, first tractor aircraft to be fitted with a machine gun successfully firing forward through the  airscrew arc thanks to deflector plates and the prowess of Roland Garros.  Contains over 50 photos including a double page image of a Morane with its fuselage fabric stripped to reveal structure and  interior detail. Elsewhere are Ian Stair's  1:72 and 1:48 scale drawings and a special photo section on 3253 flown by RNAS pilot Rex Warneford who bombed a Zeppelin out of the air in June 1915: three colour profiles adorn the rear cover. An original first edition with slight corner creases but otherwise in good order.

Rare First Edition of the 1989-published 32 page monograph on the German LVG C.VI two-seater reconnaissance biplane of WWI. 32 pages, plus covers, this book contains many rare archive photos together with  close-up details of the original aircraft at The Shuttleworth Collection where it was restored to full airworthy condition in the early 1980s. DATAFILE 17 also features 1:72 and 1:48 scale drawings by Ian Stair plus colours and markings notes with  three colour profiles on the rear cover. One copy only with slightly faded covers but otherwise in VGC!

CLASSIC FRENCH FIGHTER

THIS detailed study of the French Nieuport 17 and its near relatives the Types 17bis; 21 and 23, was written by Jack Bruce published in 1990. Over 65 archive images include close-ups of airframe and armament with portraits of all four variants, many bearing  colourful markings worn by Nieuports serving with most all Allied air services in WWI. There are six pages of  Ian Stair's 1:72 and 1:48 scale general arrangements illustrating the main differences between variants, and there are reproductions of 1918 hyper-detailed airframe drawings of a captured Nieuport  providing vital reference. With colours and markings notes plus  three colour profiles, slight creases are present on covers and folios but the copy is otherwise in good order.

 THE (IN)FAMOUS 'HARRY TATE'

NOT noted for its elegance, the Royal Aircraft Factory's RE8 was built in substantial numbers and served doggedly in 1917/1918, not only on the Western Front, but also in Italy, Mesopotamia and Palestine operating in artillery spotting, bombing and reconnaissance roles. Published in November 1990, this detailed monograph comprises 32 pages-plus covers-  and contains dozens of archive and close-up photos, plus 1918 rigging notes sketches, 1:72 and 1:48 scale plans, colour plates and a modest kit guide. Written by Jack Bruce this is an original first edition and is in excellent condition with only very minor cover creasing. One only...

THE THOROUGHBRED!

Jack Bruce authored this classic DATAFILE, No.28 in the long running series, published in 1991. 36 pages, including covers, provide a richly-illustrated account of the extraordinary Avro 504K that was built in great numbers, initially serving as a bomber then becoming the standard trainer in WWI enjoying a lengthy post- war career with multiple variants produced. Supplied to many overseas countries, the 504K remained in service for many years with some of the last examples being retired as late as 1935. This scarce original first edition in in VGC and contains dozens of rare photos-including airframe close-ups; scale drawings; markings notes; three colour profiles; contemporary handbook sketches and a model survey. Included with the DATAFILE is a dedicated modelling feature on the type by Harry Woodman.

A 'SUPERIOR SINGLE-SEAT FIGHTER'...

THE  late war Siemens Schuckert D.III and D.IV fighters were truly revolutionary and Peter M Grosz has the full story in this 36 page September 1991-published DATAFILE with dozens of rare photos from the author's extensive archives. Co-contributor Dick Bennett  studied these Siemens-Schuckert fighters for several years and produced the highly detailed 1:48 and 1:72 scale plans of both variants spread over six pages. In addition, there are comprehensive colours and markings notes along with three colour profiles on the rear cover by series editor Ray Rimell. These few remaining rare First Edition copies are  slightly creased but complete.

 IMMORTALISED BY ALBERT BALL VC

THE classic RAF SE5 that was employed to good effect by No.56 Squadron pilots in early 1917. Jack Bruce wrote our 30th DATAFILE in 1991 and provided over 50 rare archive photos from his joint archives with G S Leslie. This 36 page First Edition contains 36 pages plus covers, and features 1:72 and 1:48 scale drawings by Ian Stair that present both the extended and reduced wing planforms. There's a contemporary rigging diagram and four pages of airframe details from the 1917-dated handbook providing invaluable reference for modellers. THIS  detailed study of the long-serving Sopwith two-seater was published in July 1992 and never reprinted. Written by Jack Bruce, it is an accurate and extensive record of a type that served long-term with not only the RFC and RNAS, but also with the French Aviation Militaire-in fact production of the type in France exceeded that of its home country. IN this November 1992-published DATAFILE, American aero historian Jon Guttman chronicles the full story of the Nieuport 28, one of the war's best-looking fighter aeroplane designs.. Rejected by its country of origin, the type achieved fame as the first American serving fighter aircraft and is covered in great depth in this book. Detailed scale 1:72 and 1:48 scale  drawings by Ian R Stair complement  the 50 close-up detail and airframe images; 60 archive photos and model kit survey. 1918 DUAL-MONARCHY FIGHTER!

THIS is an original May 1994-published DATAFILE and our third WWI LFT subject which proved to be one of our best sellers. Written by historian Peter M Grosz, the operational and development  history of this fighter are meticulously chronicled describing the four Series variations over 36 pages. The book contains over 60 archive photos; nine pages of hyper-detailed 1:72 and 1:48 scale plans by Steve Simkin; pages of close-up details; four-page 1918 British capture report with sketches plus expanded colours and markings data complemented with rear cover colour profiles.. One copy only with yellowed cover that nevertheless does not compromise Jim Dietz's superlative artwork...

SUPERLATIVE SOPWITH!

THE Sopwith Snipe was introduced only at the tail-end of WWI and saw limited employment over the Western Front but went on to serve steadily in  for another decade with the peacetime Royal Air Force.  Written by Jack Bruce, this rare July 1994- dated First Edition contains 90 photos with many close-up images and several 1918 handbook sketches along the way. The 1:72 and 1:48 scale general arrangement drawings are provided by Colin A Owers across centre pages with Ray Rimell contributing the camouflage and markings notes as well as the rear cover colour plates. Detailed appendices and model kit listings up to the year of publication round off the book. With minor creases it remains in very good condition.

THE  Aircraft Manufacturing Company  DH2  pusher fighter played a significant part in defeating the 'Fokker Scourge' and only outclassed with the advent of twin-gunned Albatros biplanes in late 1916. DATAFILE 48 was written by noted DH2 specialist  Barry Gray and  reprinted due to its popularity but we have this sole remaining copy of the now scarce first  edition. The 36 page monograph Includes highly detailed scale drawings in 1:48 and 1:72 by Ian Stair and over 85 rare archive photos carefully selected by the author, together with contemporary  sketches, cockpit details and fulsome appendices. Comprehensive colours and markings content  documents the wheel and strut paint variations across the three RFC units and there are three authentic profiles on the rear cover.

WALFISCH!

With its streamlined ply-wrapped fuselage, that saw some of the earliest examples of sharkmouth nose markings, the  German Roland C.II of 1916 was a quantum leap forward in WWI aircraft design. Among many of its unique features were the fuselage escape windows  enabling the crew to quickly abandon the belly of the whale in event of a somersault landing. In a touch of whimsy, a number of Fl.Abt crews painted curtains on them... Over 2000 'walfisch'  were built in two versions, although their futuristic appearance was not matched by any appreciable performance improvement. This excellent monograph includes over 95 rare photos, detailed scale drawings and colour profiles with a protective sleeve slipped over the card covers preserving its mint condition.

CLASSIC GERMAN BOMBER!

OF the three successful twin-engined German bombers of WWI, the AEG G.IV in its short range role was actually more efficient than either of its better-known contemporaries, the Friedrichshafen G.III and Gothas G.IV/G.V. With its all-metal airframe and superior lifting power, the AEG G.IV played a successful part in conducting regular attacks on Allied targets by day and by night during 1917-1918 and over 300 were built. Author Peter M  Grosz  supports his detailed narrative with 80 archive photos whilst a further 15 close-ups of the preserved AEG in Canada provide further unique reference. With 1:72 and 1:48 GAs; 1918 capture report sketches; expanded colours and markings data, plus three full colour rear cover colour profiles, this is a must-have resource for the scale modeller.

BEST FIGHTER THE RFC IN FRANCE NEVER HAD...

JACK Bruce relates the story of the superb Bristol M.1 monoplane that served mainly in the Middle East in 1916 and later became a firm favourite with fighter instructors within the home-based CFS units. Powered initially by the 110-hp Clerget 9Z and then the 110-hp Le Rhone, the Bristol boasted a lively performance and was soon dubbed the 'Bullet'. Published in July 1995, this 36 page study presents over 100 rare images; detailed 1:72 and 1:48 scale drawings by Ian Stair and six colour profiles on the rear cover by series editor Ray Rimell support the colours and markings section . DATAFILE 52  offers the best published record of Frank Barnwells' classic design  and our sole remaining copy remains in excellent condition.

THE DOUGHTY DOLPHIN

THE Sopwith 5.F1 Dolphin has always been one of the most under-rated fighters of its era, but the unorthodox design belied a rugged and effective combat aeroplane. In this highly comprehensive study, Jack M Bruce rightly places the Dolphin in  true perspective with over 100 rare archive photos and detailed scale drawings by Colin Owers and Ian Stair that include scrap views of the first and second prototypes. Camouflage and markings notes are provided by Ray Rimell who also contributes the rear cover colour painting with Paul Monteagle's evocative artwork gracing the front. Very limited number of copies are left all exhibiting slight cover creasing.

THE Vickers FB .5 two-seat pusher enjoyed a remarkable wartime career with a Victoria Cross being awarded to an FB.5 pilot. DATAFILE 56 presents an unmatched  historical narrative by Jack  Bruce with 79 revealing photos, plus detailed 1:72 and 1:48 scale plans by Ian Stair, over ten official handbook sketches with cockpit and armament details. ONE of the German Navy's most potent seaplane fighters in WWI, the  Brandenburg W12 saw widespread service in the North Sea and proved a real thorn in the side of the British Royal Navy and a worthy opponent of the big Felixstowe flying boats. Noted aero-historian Peter M Grosz relates the fascinating development history of these highly effective water-borne warriors, dubbed the 'Kamel' by its crew, with over 50 rare archive images and five pages of contemporary SVK schematics. FRIEDRICHSHAFEN'S BIG 'BATTLE-PLANE'

RARE copy of DATAFILE 65 written by Peter M Grosz,  published in September 1997, that documents the large twin-engined Friedrichshafen G.III and G.IIIa bombers that were built in substantial numbers. Over 84 stunning archive photos from the author's personal collection support the narrative which also includes 12 pages of 1:72 and 1:48 scale plans by Ian Stair together with colours and markings notes by Ray Rimell who contributes the rear cover profiles. AN attempt to power-up the RAF BE2c, the 'improved'  BE12's wartime career was one of mixed fortunes here studiously recounted by top historian J M Bruce with the aid of official documents and records. TWIN-SEAT SESQUIPLANES!

BOTH Nieuport 10 and 12 two-seat 'Vee-strutters' are ably documented by the renowned Jack Bruce in this March 1998 published DATAFILE which presents over 90 rare archive photos and six pages of scale drawings illustrating both types in detail. Colours and markings are discussed, and the rear cover sports three side view colour profiles and a full plan view-all contributed by series editor Ray Rimell. Comprehensive appendices are included as well as a model kit list up to 1998. We have one copy available with creased upper left corners of covers and folios but otherwise the book is in very good condition and complete.

THE BENIGHTED NINES!

DE Havilland's DH9 proved markedly inferior to the DH4* it was designed to replace due mainly to the troublesome 230-hp Siddeley-Puma six-cylinder engine that offered little improvement in performance. Rightly or wrongly, the DH9 was nevertheless built in large numbers and  saw widespread service as a bomber in the latter stages of the war. Jack relates the whole sorry saga in minute depth and the type had never been covered in such depth prior to this November 1988-published monograph. Over 115 archive photos,  including detailed  airframe images; 1:72 and 1:48 scale  drawings; detailed appendices and three rear cover colour profiles mark this extended tilte.

THIS well-known German two-seater seaplane was probably the most extensively-built machine of its type in WWI and Peter Grosz's excellent DATAFILE 73 on the 33E variant is replete with over 60 rare photos from the author's own extensive archives and there are some splendid portraits among them. Ian Stair takes over the eight centre-pages with his detailed 1:72 and 1:48 scale general arrangement drawings and Ray Rimell contributes a camouflage and markings section along with the rear cover colour profiles. THE 1915 Gotha G.I,  with its distinctive underslung wing cellule, was one of the most  instantly recognisable of the successful bomber series that later served the German Army Air Service so well over British skies in 1917-1918. The full service and development history of the G.I is presented by Peter M Grosz along with 60 unique archive photos and six pages of detailed scale drawings-an unrivalled package for modellers. In addition, this now scarce DATAFILE includes contemporary factory drawings, as well as colours data supported by colour profiles on the outer rear cover. STOP-GAP FOKKER!

ONLY a handful of Fokker DVI fighters would be employed in Home Defence units in 1918 but this compact biplane, powered by by the 110-hp Oberursel Ur.II rotary engine, would become invaluable as a training machine for would-be fighter pilots transitioning to late Pfalz and Siemens types. In this 32 page monograph, Peter M Grosz relates the  development and short service life of this Fokker which has been a popular subject among model kit producers with over a dozen recorded in the Appendices- more being issued post-2000. Six pages of detailed drawings of the V.13/1 and  D.VI by Martin Digmayer; detailed appendices; colour notes and four rear cover profiles complete an excellent  study of this fascinating Fokker. THE DOVES OF WAR!

THIS excellent monograph written by Peter M Grosz, unravels the complex history of the early war Tauben monoplanes that proved so successful in the reconnaissance and trainer roles. With the benefit of extra pages, author Peter M Grosz chronicles over a dozen Taube aeroplanes produced during the early years before and after outbreak of war in 1914. With twelve pages of scale drawings showcasing two Jeannin variants and the Rumpler 4C, colour photos of the surviving restored Jeannin in Berlin, the book also includes some contemporary drawings of DFW , Goedecker and Rumpler variants. THIS now scarce DATAFILE was written by Peter M Grosz and published on 30 July 2004 and provides unrivalled coverage of the excellent LVG C.II WWI German two-seater, one of the first of its type to carry machine gun armament aloft. This pioneering  aeroplane is covered in depth by the author with the aid of more than 80 wartime photos from his extensive archive that include some rare images of uncovered fuselage, wings and tail structures, as well as contemporary sketches of cockpit interiors and machine gun mountings.
