FRANCE'S FORMIDABLE  FLYER!

GEORGES Marie Ludovic Jules Guynemer was born in Paris on 24 December 1894 and  destined to become one of the most famous French fighter pilots of the First World War with a total victory score of 54. Dennis Hylands paints a fascinating picture of this young man's meteoric rise in his country's fledgling air service with the aid of many rare archive images, many of which appeared for the first time in ACES & AEROPLANES 2 that became one of our most popular titles and very quickly sold out. We have this one final copy, complete and in good condition with slightly yellowed outer covers and small creases on right hand corners. None of which affects the many unique period photos; the centre-spread SPAD XII colour plate and rear cover Nieuport 10 profile. There's a very detailed victory log too-with photos-that records the pilot's many successes before his death in September 1917. The name of Guynemer  shines bright in his native France even to this day and one of his original SPAD VII fighters is preserved at Le Bourget in its original carefully-preserved fabric.

ONE OF BECHEREAU'S BEST!

USED to great effect by many pilots of the Entente in WWI, the rugged SPAD 7C.1 was one of the finest fighter aeroplanes of the war and served with distinction right up to the Armistice. It was built in Britain by two manufacturers: Mann Egerton and the Bleriot & Spad Aircraft Works, as well as in Russia by Dux. Jack Bruce offers the historical background with detailed and informative captions to accompany the many excellent photos of the type spread over 26 pages. There are scale drawings in the two most popular scales along with camouflage and markings notes-these include tone drawings of four- and five-colour patterns as well as the customary colour side views on the outer covers. Our sole copy is in very good condition, notwithstanding a small strip of the front over that escaped the glossy laminate coating during printing...

IN this rare DATAFILE Jack Bruce outlines the type's history with many archive photos and the content is further enhanced by 1:72 and 1:48 scale drawings; seven contemporary airframe sketches; complete five-colour camouflage schematic and four colour profiles by series editor Ray Rimell on outer covers. Surviving airframes are listed and there are many candid close-ups of one of these-HD.I No.75 when displayed at the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon. This Hanriot was subsequently acquired by the Vintage Aviation Ltd company in New Zealand and restored to full airworthiness. Our copy of DF12 is in near-mint condition.

'WILD HAWK WARNEFORD!'

EMINENT aero historian Jack Bruce has the story of the French Morane Type L 'Parasol' of 1915, first tractor aircraft to be fitted with a machine gun successully firing forward through the arc of the airscrew thanks to deflector plates and the prowess of Roland Garros. This modest monograph contains over 50 photos including a double page image of a Morane with its fuselage fabric stripped to reveal structure and full interior detail. Elsewhere, we have Ian Stair's excellent 1:72 and 1:48 scale drawings with a special photo section on 3253, the famous Type L flown by RNAS pilot Rex Warneford who bombed a Zeppelin out of the air over Belgium in June 1915. Appendices and colours data round off this unique title with three colour profiles adorning the rear cover. An original first edition with slight corner creases but otherwise in good order.

THIS detailed study of the French Nieuport 17 and its near relatives the Types 17bis; 21 and 23, was written by Jack Bruce and first published in 1990. Over 65 archive images include close-ups of airframe and armament with portraits of all four variants, many bearing the  colourful markings worn by Nieuports serving with most all the Allied air services in WWI. There are six pages of unique drawings: Ian Stair's 1:72 and 1:48 scale general arrangements illustrate the main differences between variants and there are reproductions of 1918 hyper-detailed airframe drawings of a captured Nieuport  providing vital reference. Jack Bruce authored this classic DATAFILE, No.28 in the long running series, published in 1991. 36 pages, including covers, provide a richly-illustrated account of the extraordinary Avro 504K that was built in great numbers, initially serving as a bomber then becoming the standard trainer in WWI enjoying a lengthy post- war career with multiple variants produced. Supplied to many overseas countries, the 504K remained in service for many years with some of the last examples being retired as late as 1935. The Sopwith Snipe came in at the tail-end of WWI but went on to serve for another decade with the peacetime RAF. This rare 1994 First Edition offers a goldmine of rich and authentic data on this classic fighter.

WALFISCH!

With its streamlined ply-wrapped fuselage, that saw some of the earliest examples of sharkmouth nose markings, the  German Roland C.II of 1916 was a quantum leap forward in WWI aircraft design. Among many of its unique features were the fuselage escape windows  enabling the crew to quickly abandon the belly of the whale in event of a somersault landing. In a touch of whimsy, a number of Fl.Abt crews painted curtains on them... Over 2000 'walfisch'  were built in two versions, although their futuristic appearance was not matched by any appreciable performance improvement. This excellent monograph includes over 95 rare photos, detailed scale drawings and colour profiles with a protective sleeve slipped over the card covers preserving its mint condition.

With twelve pages of scale drawings showcasing two Jeannin variants and the Rumpler 4C, colour photos of the surviving restored Jeannin in Berlin, the book also includes some contemporary drawings of DFW , Goedecker and Rumpler variants. With 90 rare photos and comprehensive captions this is an excellent pictorial resource for these fascinating early monoplanes.

Colin Owers presents this fresh look at the D.V in Datafile 151 which includes 90 archive images and over 36 colour airframe close-ups of TVAL airworthy reproductions, brand-new D.V detailed scale drawings from Martin Digmayer and three pages of brand-new colour plates by Ronny Bar forming a truly impressive reference package. One copy only in near-mint condition. 

ALBATROS REVISITED-TWICE!

PICKING up where DATAFILE 151 left off, this is the second part of Colin A Owers' informed treatment of the German WWI Albatros fighters so beloved of many model kit manufacturers the World over. Following the format of the previous volume, there are six pages of 1:72 and 1:48 scale D.Va drawings by Marty Digmayer, along with 1:32 scale versions of Mercedes D.IIIa engine and fuselage internal cockpit details. Four colour pages present some close-up airframe aspects of modern airworthy TVAL reproductions, and Ronny Bar provides a further three pages of brand new colour profiles. This sole surviving copy from the 2012 print run is in very good condition with a couple of very minor creases.
