A STAGGERING DOLPHIN!

FROM Copper State Models in 2016, and reviewed in the Winter edition of WINDSOCK WWC that year, is this total revision of  CSM's previous Dolphin resin kits released in 1999 and 2014. The upgraded  'Premium Edition' is injection-moulded and a quantum leap over its precursors. Well detailed, crisp plastic pieces along with extra resin parts for an accurate Hispano-Suiza motor; metal exhaust pipes; four-option decal sheet; a pair of comprehensive PE sheets with a large number of delicate and convincing details make up the main content. Bonus items unique to this kit include extra decals from an earlier CSM Dolphin; a PE British gauge set of bezels; resin RFC/RAF standing pilot  and a xeroxed paper roll of highly detailed, fully-annotated 1:48 scale drawings complete  with internals and control systems drawn by Bill Titus of the USA. Everything is in mint condition including the double-layered box. One only...

*CONTAINS EXTRA PARTS AND DECALS!

STAR-SPANGLED SPAD!

Mint example of the superb Dragon SPAD 13 kit 5902 in colourful post-war 'Showbird ' decor released in 1992 and which includes an excellent PE sheet of details and thin wire for rigging. As well as Reed -Chambers' patriotic markings, we have provided a comprehensive collection of alternative finishing options with AeroMaster of the USA, Print-Scale from Russia and Australian PD Decals bonus decal sheets offering a total of over a dozen wartime subjects from four nations. In addition, there are some randomly-sourced vintage SPAD XIII decals from our own spares box together with a hand-carved wood French airscrew-all to 1:48 scale.

NB: See WINDSOCK International Vol.18, No. 1,January/February 2002 for Part 1 of Greg Van Wyngarden's uniquely-illustrated SPAD PLUMAGE mini series that includes colour profiles and photos of Reed Chambers' Star-Spangled SPAD and many other 94th AS 'Showbirds'...

*CONTAINS MULTIPLE DECAL SETS!

BLACK IN STOCK!

LATEST outing for the original Aurora 1:43rd scale Fokker Triplane is from Atlantis Models of the USA who recently purchased the 1975-dated moulds to present this reissue in black plastic and new decals within a small but beautifully-formed box! The kit contains 26 parts and although the hunched pilot figure is still included, the 1957 original's mechanic and ground base is not. The mouldings are surprisingly crisp with hardly a trace of flash which considering the age of the moulds is commendable. Less so the decal sheet that provides markings for Jacobs and von Richthofen but although well printed, is incomplete and contentious with bogus white serials and Balkenkreuze only really suitable for the red one... Attractively packaged it's very much worthy of a completist collectors' attention and still builds into a good-looking DR.I with a few modifications-and if you don't like the 'fabric texture' overall, then a few coats of paint should do the trick!

DIVE BOMBER!

There have not been that many plastic kits produced of the WWII Blackburn Skua and this from the late-lamented Frog in 1956 must surely have been the first? Our survivor from the early Rovex years is complete and also includes extra spare parts including the long greenhouse canopy and decal sheet. All contents are carefully segregated into new Zip-lock polybags to avoid loss.

*CONTAINS EXTRA PARTS AND DECALS PLUS TWO GENUINE SKUA PHOTOS!

BARE-BONES BABY!

FOR  a modelling challenge of a quite different kind the AJP Maquette 1:48 Nieuport 11 Bebe released in 1996 certainly ticked all the boxes. Major parts were presented in skeletal form on a large sheet of etched brass that required carefully completed sub-assemblies for covering in the pale linen-coloured tissue paper provided. We found that the humble Pritt Stick was best for adhering the tissue to the brass frames but it requires care when doing so. None of the AJP kits include decals and so we have provided a spare sheet from an old SMER kit which should prove suitable for this model although the tissue will require pre-varnishing. All content is complete and in good condition but the flimsy box has required some slight reinforcement in places. This rare kit is now considered highly collectable...

AN ANSALDO FLIES IN!

RELEASED by Fly in 2012 to 1:72 scale is this superbly moulded and detailed rendition of the famous Italian Ansaldo SVA 5 which comes with a choice of colourful post-war markings with two sets of decals, vac-formed windshield and several optional parts. Full colour data is provided under the eye-catching box and the clear instructions present useful rigging schematics. One of the best kits of this well-known Italian design to appear.

CONTAINS EXTRA 1:48 AND 1:72 DECALS!

TINY TRAINER!

ONE of an excellent range of 1:200 scale mixed white metal and brass-etched biplane kits from Shed Models in 2011 was this petite Avro 504K. Bearing convincing rib detail on wing uppersurfaces with all struttage in flat PE format it builds into a miniature masterpiece of the iconic British WWI trainer. Superb decal sheets offer wartime markings for AFC A3.17; F2623 and H2394 in RFC service, but best of all is G-EBIZ- an overall postbox red civilian Avro operated by The Cornwall Aviation Co. Full registration letters in white for wings, fuselage and rudder are supplied to create a really-eyecatching alternative. We have just the one example and fortunately it's in mint condition...

TINY 'TATE!

From Norfolk-based Shed Models in 2011, a real gem of a WWI aeroplane model kit-in 1:200 scale!-of the legendary 1917 RAF-designed Reconnaissance Experimental No. 8 fondly remembered as the 'Harry Tate' after a popular music hall artiste of the day. Despite the small size of the white metal parts and PE sheet details, it builds into an accurate miniature and even includes a choice of decal markings. The kit is in mint condition with all the pieces and decals intact. Comes packed within foam sponge layers inside a really robust box for added protection in transit. One only...

IT'S RED OF COURSE!

Yet another outing for the venerable Merit Fokker Triplane and this version hails from Poland under the Mistercraft Hobby Kits label and moulded in bright red-what else? The plastic is of good quality with barely any flash so full marks to Mistercraft for the clean-up. High points are  the decal options with the inevitable 425/17 but at least some attempt at reproducing the overpainted crosses has been made. Raben's red/white Raven is another popular choice but the third is more interesting. The captured DR.I 212/17 in French markings would make a neat model if its unique features were replicated and five-colour camouflage applied. We have two of these kits left and both are in mint condition.

MUNIFICENT MORANE!

ONE of several upgrades to earlier Eduard 1:48 WWI kits was this Flashback re-pop of 1998 with all-new resin parts and additional photo-etched sheets-three being included*. A fully detailed instruction sheet presents invaluable rigging diagrams and multi-view painting layouts for the three decal choices on offer. The original 1994 Eduard plastic parts have not been refreshed-there being little reason to given they were accurate and well detailed in the first place. For the Type I variant the wing trailing edges were usually of piano wire and it's a simple enough matter to carefully recreate the distinctive 'scalloping ' between each rib position by careful sanding.

**Bonus items include a four page plans feature reprinted from  the November 1972 edition of Scale Models  and better yet, a 1:48 scale pair of completely scratch-built and painted spoked wheels made by Harry himself back in  the day!

MIXED DOGFIGHT

Here is a 'dogfight double' in 1:48 from SMER which contains  'strange bed fellows' combining an old Aurora/Merit Albatros of yore with the much more recent Eduard Sopwith Triplane*. It's a mismatch in several ways of course but it it does come with new decals and the 'Tripehound' is a welcome inclusion as the original kit is now somewhat scarce. The decals feature a well-known Jasta 5 D.III with the Bavarian diamonds emblazoned on the fin and rudder, whilst the Triplane selected is N6290 of Naval 8 in 1917. It provides the wing and fuselage bands and a stab at the fuselage Dixie II legend  which has been misinterpreted as Dixie Lee...The sheet is well-printed however with detailed colour views and Humbrol paint codes under the box. Contents are in mint condition.

DELIGHTFULLY DAINTY DEMOISELLE!

THIS challenging 1:48 scale tissue covered brass-etch framed kit from AJP is a real gem and represents the  Demoiselle Type 20 of 1908 designed and flown by the Brazilian aviator Santos-Dumont.* The content is modest and contains two frames of PE parts; a white metal airscrew, rubber tyres, lengths of wire and linen-coloured tissue for covering. Fully descriptive assembly notes with useful diagrams are provided and include rigging sketches. An excellent example of this tiny monoplane is currently displayed by the Musee de l'Air et de l'Espace at Le Bourget, France as shown alongside. The other photo is a period one of Santos-Dumont  flying his diminutive creation near Paris in 1908.

 SUPERLATIVE SPAD!

THIS excellent mixed medium kit of the SPAD VII in 1:48 by French JMGT is as good as it gets*. Most parts are of resin and to a very high quality with surface detail that would put many a modern plastic kit to shame. Our kit has been started by the previous owner with some cockpit areas pre-assembled- and painted as have the struts, airscrew and Vickers MG. But there's still plenty to do and the dual language instructions provide stacks of camouflage drawings, assembly diagrams and colour notes for multiple decal options. There are two sheets of markings for six colourful Escadrille examples, including Guynemer's famous S.254, and they also  include nine sets of numbers in the correct font which will be invaluable for other models. This really is one of the best WWI resin kits ever produced and one of the most accurate SPAD VIIs to this scale. The kit is now quite scarce and we have just the one example with its contents in excellent condition all individually bagged inside the restored box.

*CONTAINS BUILDING NOTES BY DEREK DAVIS!

*Reviewed in WINDSOCK International,Vol.8,No.5,Sept/Oct 1992.

 AN HANDSOME HANRIOT!

Produced in France by JMGT*, this is a high-quality resin kit of the Hanriot HD.1 fighter biplane that served so well in Belgian and Italian air units during WWI. This detailed and accurate model (a fully upgraded version of a previous release) also includes white metal and photo-etched parts, vac-form cowlings and windscreens, plus two decal sheets offering a choice of seven colourful examples. VGC.

*REVIEWED IN WINDSOCK INTERNATIONAL VOL. 9, NO,6,NOV/DEC 1993

AN HANRIOT FOR THE MATELOTS!

Based upon the earlier JMGT HD.I kit with extra parts and all new decals, this is the HD.2 floatplane version of Dupont's classic WWI design*. Comes with a great decal sheet offering no less than nine colourful variants- all detailed in the instructions. Some minor 'repair' work is required on a couple of pieces but otherwise the kit is in VGC.

PART OF OUR OWN KONDOR LEGION...

Developed form the earlier D.I, this Kondor variant embodies the most common form of wing cellule from the period. This  exceptionally produced resin from Choroszy Modelbud is highly detailed and includes decals for national markings as well as the requisite printed fabric camouflage patterns. For reference photos and 1:72 scale drawings of the D.2 [and other variants] see 'Kondor's Tiny Fighters' by Peter Grosz and Colin Owers published in WINDSOCK International Volume 13, No.2, March/ April 1997 currently available from our web-store...

A TOUCH OF THE AGO!

This unique package contains two all-resin kits of the German AGO C.IV both by Czechmaster from 1993 in basic form and again in 2007 with re-cast parts; lavish instruction sheets, colour guides and  multi-choice decal sheet of matching quality. Accurarate and extremely well detailed, the kits are among the very best of their kind and the choice of subject is highly original. One of these AGO aircraft, 8964/17, was captured by No. 32 Squadron RFC, despatched to the UK, assigned British capture number G57 and became subject of a detailed Ministry of Munitions Technical report published in 1917. This was used as basis for a unique two-part plans feature in WINDSOCK International . Both AGO kits are in near-mint condition.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE TRIPLANE!

OMEGA's 2006 release of the 1916 Hansa Brandenburg CC triplane variant offered modellers the opportunity of adding a rare bird to their collection. The aircraft was more or less a standard CCI with modified wing cellule, increased wing gap, and reduced-area lower planes. This resin kit is in near mint condition with plenty of cockpit fittings, highly detailed Hiero powerplant and a wheeled beaching dolly for display. Decals provide markings for the sole example which require careful individual cutting from the backing sheet. *Bonus features include superior CCI decals plus two standing resin pilot figures in full flying gear!

PETITE PLASTIC PUP!

Released in 1975 as a boxed Series 1 kit, the Airfix Sopwith Pup is considered by many as being one of their finest WWI models. 26 finely-detailed parts moulded in 'pale linen' make for a stand-out production. It build easily into a first-class model requiring only minimal corrections to the lower front fuselage and removal of heavy control horns-otherwise the overall finesse of the mouldings, coupled with accurate surface detail and scale outlines, is highly commendable. Our kit is in mint condition and contains a generous number of spares from several unbuilt Pup kits. Decals offer a choice of RNAS or RFC exemplars and colour guides for both are provided under the box.

*CONTAINS EXTRA PARTS!

THE 'STRETCHED' ONE!

RELEASED in 2006 Choroszy Modelbud's  long-fuselage Junkers D.I kit in 1:72 scale featuring hyper-detailed resin parts throughout is complete with authentic decals and a small clear film sheet for a windscreen.  Accurate in outline, the representation of the typical trademark Junkers corrugated skin is exemplary. Both our popular DATAFILE titles on the Junkers monoplanes sold extremely well and we have just one copy of DATAFILE 33 in stock, whilst 1:72 scale drawings from that title  were reprinted in WINDSOCK International Vol.20, No.6, November/December 2004 -limited copies of which are available in store-please see relevant links below...

CONTAINS EXTRA PARTS AND DECALS!

'BLOODY PARALYSER!'

THIS truly classic Airfix production dates from 1968 and, apart from a tired and yellowed decal sheet, our example is in near mint condition. All the parts are bagged in polythene although the greater majority are still retained on their runners. Moulded in dark green with a small number of crisp of transparencies, this was the first ever 1:72 scale plastic kit of a genuine British WWI bomber and  a bold marketing decision by Airfix for the time. Aside from a few issues regarding wing rib treatment, this kit provides an accurate and  highly detailed set of parts to produce a superb model of the 'Bloody Paralyser' and our kit is a first generation moulding with the original box art by Roy Cross depicting the bomber being attacked by a swarm of Fokker Triplanes-memorable in its own right. We have just the one kit available at present..

BIRD OF PREY!

The fabulous Martinsyde F.4 Buzzard of 1918 never saw service in WWI and its superlative qualities never tested in combat. This May 2011 AZmodel injection-moulded kit is well engineered with excellent surface detail overall. We have one mint example in original packaging with resin engine and a decal sheet offering RAF and Belgian markings-full colour guides for which appear under the box. This is  their kit No. AZ 7341 ...

THE CLASSIC FRENCH WAR HORSE!

One of several 1:72 scale French Breguet 14 plastic kits produced  by AZmodel, this is their special 'Silver' release with resin bomb load and PE extras.  Our example is in mint condition with all plastic, resin and nickel photo etch detail parts in their original polythene wallets. An excellent decal sheet offers a pair of French Escadrille machines circa 1917 and a post-Armistice Polish air force example  Full colour guides are presented  under the box with three-views providing camouflage patterns for two of the colourful choices. There's also a  bonus item in the shape of a 1:72 decal sheet with markings for three post war European aircraft.

FABLED FLOATPLANES!

ONE of six Friedrichshafen resin kits issued in 2002,the Choroszy Modelbud 1:72 scale FF 33L is an exceptional model in every respect. Accurate in outline, superbly detailed throughout and including beaching dollies and trestles for display purposes the kit is a first class example of  resin production. Indeed so fine are wing and float struts they may not take kindly to robust treatment and substitutes from either Contrail or Strutz would pay dividends. Instruction sheets are exemplary and the generic decals for the three German variants provide all requisite national markings and fuselage Marine numbers. Contents are mint and the box is in equable condition.

*For the ultimate reference we have WINDSOCK DATAFILE 73 by Peter Grosz available from this store-please see the link below...

GERMAN TWO-SEATER CLASSIC!

This 1:72 scale all-resin kit from Choroszy Modelbud was released in 2002 and reviewed in WS Vol. 18, No.2,March/April of that year. It is a beautifully crafted kit with some extraordinarily fine detail and is accurate in outline. Highpoints include the exquisite Benz motor and fully appointed cockpits, whilst the finesse of all control and flying surfaces is exemplary. Authentic decals provide a choice of well-known German and post-war Polish examples and our package also includes extra white metal and PE detail parts for good measure! As well as DATAFILE 71, another invaluable reference available on site is WINDSOCK International Vol.14, No.5,September/October 1998  with a unique four page photo archive of LVG C.V factory floor construction sequences from an original 1917 company catalogue!

PUSHING IT!

ONE of Merit's very own in-house productions extended their 1:48 scale series and one of their best-embossed markings notwithstanding Moulded in dark green, outlines of all main parts require only minimal correction: wing ribs are on both surfaces and once the engraved roundels are erased the wings will require thinning. Surface detail elsewhere is presentable and the Monosoupape engine rotates in sync with its propeller but those big wheels will need replacing! Nevertheless, with some refining overall and a few added details the kit has a lot to offer. Plastic content of our example is mint although we cannot guarantee the decals will remain intact once immersed so an alternative, an ex-Smer DH2 sheet, is supplied. Also included, a number of parts from a spare kit which may prove useful in case of damage or loss: even an original phial of polystyrene cement is here but it's rock-hard!

WELCOME RETURN!

Testors' re-imagining of  Hawk's venerable 1950's Nieuport 17 C.1 speaks volumes for the overall quality of the original tool-making for it barely reveals its true age. Surface detail of fuselage halves is greatly improved and a redesigned airscrew now has a proper shaft as opposed to the original's    dress-maker's pin! This is a great kit to build, with less than two dozen parts, overhauled instructions and accurate painting guides that make it an ideal introduction to modelling 1:48 scale WWI aircraft kits. Superb new decals and a resin figure of a typical French aviator complete this rejuvenated classic!

CONTAINS BONUS PILOT FIGURE!

SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND, SIR?

2016 Eduard release of their classic Albatros D.III re-issued as a 'vanilla' Weekend Edition sans any PE items-just pure plastic and a reduced two-option decal sheet.Plenty of internal detail including a full Mercedes, the two runners also include optional rudder and main-plane configurations. Accurate overall with subtle and convincing  surface detail this is Eduard on their very best behaviour. Decals feature two perennial favourites flown by two leading  aces of WWI -one Albatros being red overall, the other bearing three red hearts... An extra bonus is a mint sheet of 1995 AeroMaster decals with a pair of colourful D.III fighters supported by two D.Va subjects.* One of the former offers a an OAW -built Albatros of Jasta 49 so now you can make use of that alternative rudder in the kit! Our example is as new and complete with all parts repacked in zip-locked polythene bags-none of that sticky-backed cellophane nonsense!

*CONTAINS EXTRA DECALS!

BIFF!

Airfix have produced a number of quality WWI aircraft kits over the years initiated by this fine Bristol Fighter. 32 parts, plus display stand, provide a pretty accurate model of the wartime 'Biff' with restrained surface detail and refined 'struttage'. Our kit comes with extra parts from later mouldings with somewhat over-enthusiastic upgraded surface details that make for interesting comparisons... Other bonus items include three decal sheets, one being of more recent vintage  with alternative markings.

CONTAINS EXTRA PARTS AND DECALS!

'GROUND-POUNDER'!

Bell's extraordinary P-39 Airacobra was used to deadly effect for ground strafing and 'tank busting' by American and Russian pilots during the Second World War. Several variants were developed and the kit includes sufficient parts to create either fighter; fighter bomber or ground attack versions. Crystal-clear transparencies include an unobtrusive 'tail-prop' for the rear fuselage to balance the model on all three wheels without recourse to nose weights. The box is somewhat careworn but all contents are complete and in VGC. Includes a rare Eduard MA PE detail set designed specifically for this kit.

*CONTAINS PE DETAIL PARTS!

SILVER HAWK!

This is an early 22-piece Nieuport 17 from the pioneering Hawk Model Co. of Illinois and one of the best WWI plastic aircraft kits of the 1950s period. This mint example is moulded in silver and boasts accurate outlines in most every respect other than  lower wing tips that require attention. It's a simple model with a partial Le Rhone engine forming part of the cowling moulding; rudder and tail skid are integral to the fuselage halves and the etched decal positions will need removal along with the Hawk registered legend on lower wing! All struts are finer than most-but the rear Vee strut forward of the cockpit needs to be created in lieu of the separate vertical versions offered. If skinning the fuselage sides to disguise the stringer detail, the plastic card should be devoid of detail -the vertical spacers only become apparent in flight as the fabric was pulled in-see page 6 of Nieuport Fighters Vol.1...Decals provide RFC markings combined with a Lafayette Indian head motif-somewhat confusingly-so we have included a 1998 sheet of Guynemer's markings from one of the Eduard Nieuports. Condition of this Hawk kit's content, decals and box belies its venerable age-it almost looks brand new

*CONTAINS EXTRA DECAL SHEET!

AN EARLY BIRD

History has not uncovered the exact year that Hawk released their pioneering 1:48 plastic SPAD and Nieuport models but it was around the early to mid 1950s and almost certainly predating the first Aurora releases. Considering its age, the SPAD is surprisingly good with pin-sharp wing and tail trailing edges; mostly accurate outlines and bearing reasonable surface detail-etched decals placement guides notwithstanding. Hawk's SPAD represents an early version with rounded wing tips and despite overcooked cut-outs, the wing treatment is a lot better than average with finely-raised rib lines that can be softly sanded to create taping. Fuselage is slightly over-length but tail-plane parts are exact and razor sharp although the struts are two-dimensional with flat edges-a carry over from Hawk's previous balsa wood days Likewise the airscrew is secured with a pin that's looking a little rusty now1 Our kit has remained in good condition even the decals-from a later kit-look viable and all original 28 parts are present and correct. The cut-out-and-keep box art, whilst certainly dramatic, is a little mixed-up with the SPAD depicted more akin to the earlier S.VII in its overall clear-doped and Ecru finish with  French roundels that don't sit right with Eddie Rickenbacker's signature fuselage markings!

REVELL'S EARLY BIRDS!

BACK in 1965, Revell released a unique WWI themed threesome in 1:72 scale-all of them 1915/1916 fighter designs. The British de Havilland DH2  pusher (H-643); French Morane Saulnier Type N monoplane (H-664) and the notorious German Fokker E.III Eindecker ( H-665) were mostly accurate and certainly original subjects that had not been kitted to this scale before. We have all three US-boxed versions, each bearing Brian Knight's fabulous artwork slightly changed from his originals for Revell GB in the UK where the trio was first released. All three  kits are in very good condition although their box lower trays show some wear and creasing.

*The DH2 is moulded in beige and includes a stand from a spare kit and also a two-option high-quality decal sheet courtesy of the Revell Germany 2007 reissue.

*The Morane is moulded in white plastic and exhibits some flash on smaller parts. It includes the original kit decal sheet with markings for the Imperial Russian Type N flown by Smirnov and the macabre rudder motif.

* Finally, the Eindecker. Moulded in beige with the stand and a spare rudder in light grey from a later reissue. The original kit decals offer markings for E.III 210/16 and wing eiserne kreuze show evidence of cracking so the excellent 2008 Revell Germany sheet has been included as compensation. This carries markings of two aircraft and includes stencils as well as wing compass and leather cockpit padding.

All three kits include their original instructions, copyrighted Revell GB, all  have been checked for completeness and parts  carefully secured within ziploc bags to prevent escapes. We are offering these excellent kits as a unique 3-in-1 package which is available only from this website...

 FORGOTTEN FIGHTER!

JUST one of myriad WWI 1:72 scale all-resin kits from prolific Choroszy Modelbud of Krakow, Poland.  This little gem is an exacting miniature of the 1918 Albatros D.XI prototype (L41) 2209/18 (w/n 5045) that first flew in May1918*. With its tightly-cowled 80-hp Siemen-Halske rotary, 'wireless' wing geometry and spindly undercarriage it was a radical departure from previous Albatros fighter designs. It never entered production, neither did its partner 2208/18 -both performing poorly in Fighter Competitions. However, it's an interesting design that deserves a place in any collection of model Albatros fighters. This resin kit is of superb quality, finely-detailed and accurate in outline with fully-appointed cockpit. Decals and windscreen material are also included and all content is near mint.

PIONEER US FIGHTER!

MADE famous by emerging American aces in 1918, the Nieuport 28 was a step-up from the French company's previous 'Vee-strutter'  sesquiplane designs and performed well in service despite an un-nerving tendency to shred fabric from its wings! Post Armistice saw many surplus Nieuports employed by Hollywood studios for various celluloid epics such as The Dawn Patrol-twice!-and others. Glencoe revamped the old Aurora kit  during 1995 in attractive new boxing  that included a sparkling Scale Master decal sheet bearing six colourful options. Happily, most all the original embossed markings had been excised from the mouldings. Our example of the kit  is complete with all 34 parts in very good condition-as are the decals- everything being as sharp and complete as when the kit was first released.

A FAST BERG!

This unusual sesquiplane was never designed to replace the famous Aviatik D.I but as an experiment to increase performance. Results were excellent but the type never entered wholesale production and just 16 were built and assigned to Flik 61J. The superb Karaya resin kit was released in 2005* and is all-resin, the quality and finesse of the parts being top class. We have just one example in near-mint order.

*Reviewed in WINDSOCK International, Vol.22, No.1,Jan'/Feb' 2006.

NO FRILLS FOKKER!

1957 saw release of the Airfix Fokker DR.I Triplane,  one of their most basic 1:72 scale models and unsurprisingly in bright red plastic for one of the Baron's machines. With only 24 parts the kit was quick to assemble, despite the extra wing, and looked OK  when carefully built and painted even if it was slightly smaller than true 1:72 scale! Our example is one of the earliest with the 'Type 1' paper header bearing Charles Oates vivid art and is slightly creased. On the other hand plastic content is sound missing just one u/c leg which has been cured by an extra parts runner being included. Alternative decals for Voss' F.I 103/17 are also in the packet.

**CONTAINS EXTRA PARTS AND DECALS!

SEA-GOING SOPWITH!

Released in 1957, the Airfix Sopwith Camel represented the 2F.1 'Ship's Camel' with single Vickers gun ahead of the pilot and an over-wing Lewis. Accurate, with reasonably realistic surface detail, this venerable model kit contain just 26 parts and requires only minimal modification to enhance it further. Wing and centre-section struts are quite fine and setting up the wings could prove tricky as as the instruction's stagger sketch is that of the Fokker Triplane! Markings feature Culley's famous N6812 which he flew off a towed platform on 10 August 1918 to destroy Zeppelin L53 over the North Sea. Our early kit is in VCG aside from yellowing decals an slightly creased header.

*CONTAINS EXTRA DECALS!

'HARRY TATE' !

ONE of four Airfix 1:72 scale WWI kits produced in 1957, the RE8 has been a staple of their annual catalogues on and off ever since and is well overdue for a re-tool! Our original is from initial production runs with minimalistic surface detail overall and undernourished crewmen. It's reasonably accurate for its time and with care and dedication an excellent RE8 can result. Apart from the yellowed decal sheet and worn paper header, plastic content is mint with only a few parts on the loose which we've bagged separately to thwart the dreaded 'carpet monster.'...

AN EARLY BIRD!

One of the very first Airfix Albatros kits (Pattern No. 1393) from the second production run when the header artwork was changed along with the company logo. Moulded in silver, it is complete and the plastic remains in very good condition although the decals are beyond their sell-by date and the wrapper decidedly worn and torn-it still bears the original pencilled price of 2/- and was probably purchased form F W Woolworths. For the period, the kit is basically sound although subsequent issues would be irrevocably altered by American MPC/Airfix-but that's quite another story...

BLUE BIRD!

This 1963 Airfix Albatros D.V reissue was moulded in a mauve-bluish plastic and had the benefit of some much-needed retooling thanks to early American Airfix distributors MPC. Our example 's plastic is near mint although the decal sheet and paper header have suffered a little over the decades. Basically accurate in outline, the kit's upgraded surface detail is far superior to the original 1957 release improving a reasonably sound model even further, one which still holds up pretty well despite its age. This particular kit was reserved for a 10-year-old Rimell by
The Model Shop in St. Anne's Road, Harrow which explains the  customer reference in Biro on the header's reverse!

AN ADMIRABLE AVRO!

Airfix have produced a number of famous RAF trainers over the years:Tiger Moth; Harvard; Chipmunk et al and their 504K is a worthy addition to the canon. 37 well-moulded parts build into an authentic model of this famous design which was built in great numbers and during a long career served as night-fighters; light bombers and floatplanes, whilst it enjoyed extensive civilian life after WWI. This is an excellent example of the first 1967 production run and includes a choice of markings on its large decal sheet. The kit has been reissued several times over the years  with  new decals -including ER1772 in overall aluminium finish- which has been re-introduced this year in the popular Airfix 'Vintage Classics' ranges.

OLD CHARLIE!

Guynemer's fabled SPAD VII immortalised in 1:72 scale by Airfix in their 1967 kit 129. It builds into an accurate representation of the classic French fighter in 29 parts moulded in beige-colours varied-with realistic surface detail on fuselage halves. Wing ribs are somewhat over-emphasised but can be sanded back. Our example is complete, with plastic content in near-mint  condition and includes an extra main-plane pre-sanded to remove ribs ready for paint and decal tapes. Three decal sheets include one from a later issue. Colour schemes for these SPADS are legion-the type serving in British; Belgian; Russian and Italian units as well as its native France offering multiple choice of finish.

'HANNOVERANA'!

THIS remains one of the best WWI aircraft kits Airfix ever did and their Hannover Cl.IIIa builds into a generally accurate model straight out of the polythene bag... 31 pale blue parts with better than average surface detail and aside from some wayward fuselage sections, all outlines accord almost perfectly with recent scale drawings of the type. Both Spandau and Parabellum guns are neatly done with observer's ammunition strip and light bomb loads adding interest around the rear cockpit. Painting represented the greatest challenge in 1967 as plentiful and authentic 'lozenge' decals were not widely available back in 1967 so committed modellers found hand-painting the tiny ten-colour patterns their only recourse. In later years  ranges of quality printed fabric decals have appeared to greatly ease the finishing stage of  classic kits like the Airfix Hannover...

'ONE OF FOUR...'

Issued in 1967 the 1:72 Airfix DH4 remains one of the best WWI British aircraft kits ever produced in this scale. Our kit lacked its original Lewis/rear gun mounting and the shortfall has been made good by extra runners that also provide airscrew and four additional bombs. The kit is in its original pale cream plastic and is not only accurate in outline, but also extremely well detailed especially fuselage halves with fabric wrinkles! All parts are in VCG although both decal sheet and paper header are a little careworn-a more recent decal sheet is included and  various loose parts have been individually bagged.

AN AVRO OF MERIT!

RELEASED in 1956 by Merit, this excellent 1:48 scale kit of the classic British Avro 504K training aircraft was a welcome addition to their range, one of several home-grown subjects the Potters Bar firm produced. Kit 4745 was moulded in a buff colour in at least two shades and sometimes a bright yellow. It was accurate in outline, bore convincing surface detail and easy to assemble thanks to a first-class instruction leaflet and good fit of parts. This pre-owned example is complete with all original 37 pieces accounted for despite having been detached from their 'sprue trees' at some point. The box is in reasonable condition with several worn areas and minor tears and unavoidably yellowed with age.An end label has been recreated in correct style as the original was quite degraded. Extras include a CSM Clerget in white metal and PE British instruments, plus a virtually complete ex-Smer decal sheet with British and Australian trainer options. Only the 'Auroraesque' etched markings 'despoil' what many consider to be Merit's finest addition to their range.

LAND CLERGET TRACTOR!

The first Sopwith Strutter kit by Roden of the Ukraine was released in 2023 and streets ahead of most others in their 1:32 scale series. The Sopwith two-seater is an impressive production with plenty of authentic cockpit details, crisp Clerget and twin gun armament as well as a number of unused bombs for  upcoming kits. Two main-planes as supplied, one with solid centre-section, the other with generous cut-outs for which thin acetate panels are provided. The kit is mint and comes with extra decals; engine frame; used Profile No.121, plus a xerox  copy of the original 1917 T.5 technical rigging notes with airframe sketches, annotated drawings and RAFwire diagram with all wire gauges and lengths specified. Although our first Strutter DATAFILE has sold out we still have copies of Volume 2 in store that covers single seat variants including the Comic night-fighter conversion for which photos and drawings are featured. These will be of pertinent interest to any modellers building Roden's second Strutter release (637) currently available.

 K & B KIT NO. 1135-170, FOKKER E.V

ONE of a dozen Aurora Collector's Series re-issues, the renamed Fokker E.V was moulded in light grey with the customary accessories in black. Our kit is in very good condition with all original 30 parts, most fallen from their 'trees' so have been secured in several zip-lock bags. Experienced WWI modellers will be familiar with the kit's several flaws, notably the undernourished wing although its square off tips closely match the Frankfurt Kruck Company  experimental stress test wing illustrated on page 30 of DATAFILE 25. Ian Stair's drawings on centre pages also reveal the tailplane's missing forward cut-out and slightly shortened fuselage which can be corrected. Decals represent Polish example 001 flown by Pol.pil. Stefan Stec in April 1919 and looks to be in fair condition. The attractive box artwork shows his E.V with solid green uppersurfaces and pale blue beneath although these ex-German monoplanes retained their original factory finish of printed fabric areas and stained ply wings in four colours applied strie style. As a bonus our kit includes sufficient  four- and five-colour 'lozenge' decal strips in 1:48 scale to aid modellers seeking  a more authentic finish for these aircraft in post -WWI Polish service.

LATTICE TAIL IN QUARTER SCALE!

CSM injection-moulded Caudron G.IV, impeccably moulded and packaged with plenty of PE detail items and comprehensive decal sheet covering a quartet of late version French service machines. All frames remain intact within their original plastic bags and aside from one repaired box corner  the kit offered is absolutely mint as purchased. One only.

 K&B KIT NO.1126-1-97-GOTHA G.V.

MODEST overhaul of Aurora's original 1958 126-1-98, the K&B reissue formed part of their 'Collectors Series' which typically featured new decals and a box-filling vacformed ground base of dubious value all packed within large attractive boxes showcasing stunning artwork by John Amendola. The Gotha contains 66 deep blue parts with 51 'accessories' on black runners-the original kit's five figures are also included but not the groundbase with its chocks. Despite the opprobrium heaped upon the original kit since first release, it became the holy grail of kit collecting in the 1960s prompting a private enthusiast to collaborate with Aurora issuing 1000 'replica' kits at bargain prices. The following year Aurora relaunched the kit themselves with some minor revisions. Comparing the kit's major components with latter-day scale plans shows them to be tolerably accurate in scale and outline providing a sound platform to build on whilst refining chunkier aspects.  Inaccurate bombs and incorrectly- shaped engine 'power eggs' are the main failings, the latter proving a challenge of re-modelling. Our kit includes 1:48 scale drawings of the nacelles for adventurous  modellers wishing to make their own... Decals provide both styles of national insignia with only the eiserne kreuze matching embossed wing and rudder positions...

THE LINDBERG LINE!

Original 1965 boxed 1:48 scale SE5A kit in glorious vivid yellow plastic! Includes tailskid dolly; mechanic figure, wheel chocks and a three piece engine with separate exhausts.Original clear stand is included along with instruction leaflet and a decal sheet that has admittedly fallen victim to ageing. Otherwise the kit is in very good condition. One only.

BOEING! BOEING!

The stubby Boeing F4B-4 was designed for the US Navy and the first example was delivered in July 1923. Seven first-line units were equipped with the type to serve on five carriers: Enterprise; Langley; Lexington; Ranger and Saratoga. The particular K & B example available here is a 1972 re-issue of the original Aurora kit from 1957 and contains 31 parts moulded in grey styrene-including a transparent windscreen. Good surface detail overall but some parts will require a little thinning, but at least there are none of those pesky embossed markings' positions! The contents, including a typically colourful decal sheet, are virtually mint although the box has been put through the wringer at some point! We have attempted to restore it to a more presentable condition using period -style materials.

'THE LITTLE SLINGSHOT!'

Ansaldo's Balilla is immortalized by Poland's Techmod by their stunning 1:48 scale kit combining injection-moulded plastic with 3D printed parts. The latter are superb, down to the ultra-fine matrix and emblem on the radiator front to delicate spoked wheels and a plethora of cockpit parts also. This is a mint example and provides comprehensive instruction diagrams and multi-view colour profiles illustrating the five options that are printed on a quite spectacular decal sheet. One of the finest 1:48 scale models of this classic Italian WWI fighter ever kitted.

BALSA FLIES BETTER!

Great 24'' span flying model of the classic WWI British fighter biplane with full content in very good condition.First issued in 1958, this super model is designed for rubber and diesel engines but easily converted for CO2 and electric power.

I AM THE WALRUS!

ONE of Merit's larger 1:48 scale kits, and one they produced themselves rather than being a knock-off, their 1956 Supermarine Walrus was, for its day, a good model. Some cabin interior detail is provided which is worth working up as the transparent cabin is so crisp and clear. Wing and tail rib detail is well represented and  neatly recessed hull rivets lend themselves to weathering wash techniques. Outlines are fairly accurate and assembly eased by the struts' linked tie-bar and slot assembly. Because the original decals are somewhat aged, we have included a much more recent alternative from Classic Airframes with four diverse subjects. Full wingwalk stencils are provided along with detailed camouflage drawings showing accurate uppersurface patterns. Kit contents themselves are complete in very good condition with any loose parts segregated within polybags. Detailed instruction leaflet offers exploded assembly diagrams and vital rigging sketches. It may have been surpassed in recent years by Airfix but the pioneering Merit 'Shagbat' still has plenty to offer adventurous modellers!

LE DIABLE ROUGE!

MERIT's 1956 copy of an Aurora Series B original, the 'Albatros D.III Scout' comprised 29 parts and our example is vivid red although others could be found moulded in dark green. This 1:46/1:48 scale kit has a number of issues including an over-corpulent fuselage that more closely resembles  D.V/D.Va variants and too deep even for them. Parts are actually crisper than Aurora's and fuselage detail is more refined. Originally, our kit was missing the miniscule gunsight, pilot and intake manifold. These have all been reinstated from other kits, which explains the black and grey parts shown. Scale outlines of most other parts are OK but the fin/rudder are undersize and to represent later types will need replacing along with the tailskid. Decals are basic and probably unusable so a more recent Smer sheet is provided with Werner Voss' well-known markings. Our kit contains  missing parts slip and a fascinating mini catalogue of  Merit's kit ranges which included a diversity of cars and marine subjects as well as aircraft.

THE GREEN FOKKER!

The 1957 Merit Fokker D-7 was a knock off copy of Aurora's Kit 106 also released during that same year. It's pretty much identical, but  Merit instruction leaflets were generally superior with more informed histories, better colour notes where necessary and useful rigging sketches where appropriate. Although closer  to 1:46 than the 1:48, the kit is a reasonably good effort although the overscale struts and suspect wing sections wil demand attention. All 34 original parts are in VGC,complete with loose items individually bagged within the original flimsy cellophane and paper wrap that came with the kit. The printed identification label at the end of the box has been specially recreated, the original strip having been ripped off long ago. Retailing for just slightly more than their Aurora equivalents at the time-about five shillings and eleven pence-the D-7 and others in the range remained popular despite their unimaginative boxes...

THE ROCKETEER!

THIS is Merit's 1956 Nieuport 11  a pirate copy of  Aurora's original Bebe and contains 35 parts  moulded in a deep beige. Several parts-wings and fuselage-are slightly overscale whilst most others are true 1:48 just like the American original. Equipped with eight strut-mounted Le Prieur rockets, the kit builds into a presentable miniature as most all major outlines are accurate and only needs minor adjustment.  Apart from the careworn box, our example is in very good condition and everything is enclosed in the original paper/cellophane sheath with a replacement central Vee strut to replace the severed part. This, and other loose parts, have been bagged up to prevent loss. Decals are the same as Aurora's-N1354 of the Lafayette Escadrille  and well past their sell-by date. Extras include: Aurora black-moulded prop shaft; Lewis gun; engine and a pair of wheels that will prove useful replacements since Merit have embossed trademarks on theirs!

CANARY-COLOURED CAMEL!

Many vintage kit boxes, instructions and decals yellow with age over time but in the case of Merit's Sopwith Camel it was yellow from the very outset! Inexplicably, this copy of Aurora kit 102 was moulded in the same bright hue as Merit's own Tiger Moth and, for some production runs, their Avro 504K too. With all its 30 parts accounted for, the Camel offered here is well preserved with original transfers for B7270 sans red/white striping and fuselage markings for No.209 Squadron RAF. The scale is closer to 1:45 than it is to 1:48 and mirrors the Aurora kit's original mainplane with enlarged centre-section cut-out that requires some structure added, and the asymmetric cockpit opening. Neither is inaccurate but these features were not universal and certainly inappropriate for the subject aircraft. Other than lacking the usual glue capsule, aside from a recreated box label, the kit remains as purchased in the 1960's down to the trademark paper-backed cellophane wrapping of the content.

SILVER SCOUT!

ANOTHER Aurora clone, the  Merit S.E.5A-SCOUT has been subject od more copies and more re-issues from many manufacturesr down the years than any other WWI kit subject-and it still goes on. Quite why is a bafflement but we have several examples available and this 1956 Merit version is mint and contains 30 parts. Moulded in pale green , it is cleanly moulded with barely any flash. Outlines of wings and tailplane halves are good but the fuselage is overlong, near to 1:46 scale, although the integraly-moulded fin and rudder are to scale. No rib detail under wing or tail surfaces, these easily suggested by contrasting decal tapes over a CDL finish.Nose contours are reminiscent of the earlier SE5 but with a little ingenuity and plastic card either version could be built from the kit with relative ease. Decals provide Aurora's mixed take on McCudden's No.6 and are showing their age. So we've included a more recent replacement from a 2002 Revell/Monogram re-issue with RAF and USAS markings.

BAGGED-ONE SE5A!

COMPRISING  a complete (unboxed) 1958 Merit SE-5A kit and offered bagged with our own unique card header in the style of Airfix and Playcraft period packaging. As well as the original 30 part kit are four excellent SE5A references to suit any builder. They include:

*AeroModeller 1:48 scale plans feature!

*Blueprint-style scale drawings and detailed airframe sketches from an early edition of Aeroplane Monthly!

*Large area fold-out colour poster cutaway and profiles by John Batchelor as presented with Purnell's 1970 First World War part-work with facsimile 1917 RAF plan view drawing on the reverse!

*Profile Publications No.1 the SE5A by J M Bruce published in 1965!

This special collation is only available from this store as a 'one-of-a kind' special offer and cannot be repeated!

MALTA DEFENDER!

One of the first Gloster Gladiator plastic kits was from Airfix in 1956 following their Spitfire Mk.I released three years previously , the very first aircraft kit produced by the company that became a runaway sales success. Despite the worn paper header, this example is complete down to the original transfer sheet ; early style display stand and a packing slip that will bring back fond memories for many older modellers. The kit parts are clean and  surprisingly most of them  have remained on their runner after all these years inside the original polythene bag. For kit collectors, this now rare early Airfix product is a true classic and something of a novelty...

'TOMMY' !!!

This 1979 edition of the Guillow's classic is in tip-top condition and includes all the balsa parts and strip; tissue covering and decals; vacformed plastic parts and hard polystryrene wheel halves; required to complete a fine flying scale model of the classic Thomas Morse S4C Scout of 1918. One of their most popular kits of the time and we are able to offer this single mint example to our customers....

 THE RAF'S FINEST FIGHTER!

Despite the garish box art, this is a pretty accurate model of the British SE5 WWI fighter in the usual Guillow's style with full instructions;balsa and plastic parts plus decals and covering tissue. Vacform pilot figure included along with ply firewall and instructions for Cox .010 power conversion.

SAVE IT FOR A RAINY DAY!

From Czech CMR, a really stunning resin kit of the 1918 French Morane Saulnier Type AI parasol monoplane, one of the first models produced of this attractive design. All parts are resinous and will demand a careful modeller to prepare the super-fine smaller pieces once removed from their delicate webs. Detail is first class, with accurate structure representation and provision for a rotating powerplant/airscrew assembly. Full instructions, colour notes and drawings plus a really high-grade decal set with two choices of decor add perfect finishing touches. Bonus items include a copy of Mini Datafile No.5 and a sheet of 1:48 scale AI decals produced by Microscale for the Copper State Models kit  This is one unique package and it's only available here!

SEEING DOUBLE!

Two-in-one ''Dual Combo'' set with a pair of mint Eduard MA Pfalz D.III kits from 1996! Excellent crisply-moulded parts with PE details  and a sharply-printed decal sheet offering authentic markings for Jasta 15 and Jasta 22 Pfalzen. One of Eduard's 'Flying Circus' series from the era, this 1:48 scale kit (8005) was reviewed in the Volume 13, No.3, May/June issue of WINDSOCK International  where it was rightly praised. All contents of both kits packed in the single box are in their original unopened polybags.

TORA! TORA! TORA!

The infamous Japanese Zero was immortalized in 1:48 scale by Tamiya in their excellent 1973 release. Content of our kit is near-mint,although the box is a little creased in places. All parts remain on their runners with just a few being detached and being zip-locked bagged for protection. Fabulous decals offer five subjects with accompanying colour notes forming a crucial element of the instruction sheet.

*We have added a number of bonus items inside the box: Eduard's rare PE detail set 48-176 (for the Hasegawa kit) and a pair of top notch refernece books: Profile Publications No. 129 and Squadron Signal's AM6 Zero in Action from 1983-packed with many photos, colour profiles and line drawings!

PFALZ ON THE 'PFLAT'

Warplanes' vacform Pfalz D.III (sic) produced by Rareplanes in 1976-no decals were included. Despite its label this has the large area tailplane of a D.IIIa which can easily be cut down to suit. The parts require careful treatment when wresting from their backing sheet, not to mention some fettling, but the results can be surprisingly satisfying. This unopened example is virtually mint and we have added six extensive decal sheets offering multiple finishes for the model-you'll be spoilt for choice!

NIGHT OWL!

Moulded by Revell (GB) of Potters Bar in 1967, this near-mint 1:72 scale Heinkel HE-219 'Owl' night-fighter is moulded in Revell's trademark pale blue plastic with a single transparency for the tandem cabin. This is a well-detailed and easy to assemble model although it is inevitably a tail-sitter' without nose weights: although a clear plastic 'prop' under the rear fuslage would do just as well. The decal sheet, whilst uncreased, may not hold together unless the entire surface has been pre-lacquered in clear acrylic. That aside, the contents are in first class order and include a sheet of 1:72 scale German WWII fin crosses that we are not able to illustrate here!!!

FIRST ACROSS THE CHANNEL!

Here is an original Frog Trail-Blazing Bleriot XI monoplane as first released in 1965. Despite the weathered and compromised box, the contents are complete, right down to a pseudo patch of Dover turf; a French flag fluttering from a pole and a standing Louis Bleriot figure. Despite the unavoidable limitations imposed by the small scale, the kit can be worked on to achieve a pleasing result. Just one available.

A  REAL SCALE(Y) MODEL!

1:48 scale Renwal Aero-CURTISS HEDDON JENNY in the dramatic fish-inspired  barnstorming colours of  Frank Hawks. Box is a bit battered but contents are complete with full Aero-Skin panels and a bottle of weapons-grade Testors liquid cement...face mask included!

 ARMOURED ALBATROS!

THE rugged 1917 Albatros J.I armoured ground attack aircraft immortalised by two superlative all-resin kits from Choroszy Modelbud   in 2002-this is the German version [Kit No.A66] and comes with extra decals. With superb detail and razor-sharp trailing edges to all flying surfaces, the kit is accurate in outline and boasts fully detailed cockpit areas plus full armament- and it's in mint condition...

CONTAINS EXTRA DECALS!

'THE HUNTER'!

This excellent  all-resin kit from Poland's Karaya was their very first 1:48 scale WWI kit and it's a good one! With PE parts and a multi subject decal choice spread over four sheets, this is a really super kit of the Italian Ansaldo A.I Balilla fighter biplane so popular with  enthusiasts and model manufacturers. This excellent production was reviewed in WINDSOCK International Vol.21, No.2, March/April 2005- copies of which are available from stock-please see the link below...

SALMSON-POWERED SHORT...

Karaya 1:72 scale all-resin classic with RNAS decals and parts for a nine-cylinder Salmson engine that powered this variant. Includes beaching trolley and tail trestle plus PE detail parts for cockpit internals and spoked wheels for the trolley. VGC.
