Just one airworthy example of an Avro Lancaster exists in the UK, maintained and flown by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight it regularly thrills air show crowds during Summer seasons and leads most every BBMF flypast over Buckingham Palace for various Royal events. In this pictorial guide to the 'Lanc', author Ray Rimell traces its wartime development from the Manchester to a flying test-bed for a variety of new jet engines well after WWII had ended. Among he Lancasters' most well known exploits in that conflict concerned Operation Chastise- the famous Dam-busting missions of June 1943 when the bravery and sacrifice of specially-trained crews from No. 617 Squadron combined with the genius of Barnes Wallis and his bouncing bombs- 'the Scampton Steamroller' -that breached the Eder and the Mohne dams at great cost to the attacking flights. The two factions combined forces yet again when the mighty German battleship Tirpitz fell victim to the massive 'Grand Slam' bomb, a 22,000 lb behemoth that only the pwerful Lancaster could deliver. The aircraft formed the backbone of Bomber Command''s regular nightly raids on German, over 1000 sorties, that cost so many lives both on the ground and high above it. Packed within this Aeroguide's 32 pages are over 20 rare wartime images; over 70 close-ups of the BBMF and RAFM examples with great details of armament; gun turrets; interiors; engines; undercarriage and more. Line sketches include nose blister; full bomb load variations with the the dambusting mine; pilot's seat and controls plus detailed interior sketches showing crew stations, etc. There's a double page cutaway fully annotated and monotone tinted 1:144 scale drawings reveal typical 1944 RAF night camouflage and a further five ides views showcase other versions. Topping it all off is a colour profile on the rear cover depicting a Lancaster B Mk.1 Special in day camouflage and armed with a 'Grand Slam' bomb.
