90. Sopwith B.1&T.1 Cuckoo
£9.25
SPRING 1917 saw the introduction of the Sopwith B.1, a powerful single- seater biplane designed to supercede the bombing version of the 1 1/2 Strutter- covered in DATAFILE No.80.Contemporary with the B.1 was the T.1,designed as a torpedo carrier;both aircraft were powered by the 200-hp Hispano Suiza and both resembled each other closely. So it was logical for author Jack Bruce to embrace both types in this unique monngraph where he relates their respective histories in some depth. The T.1 was eventually named the Cuckoo;three versions where produced and in 1921 three Viper-powered Cuckoos were despatched to Japan as examples of instructional torpedo stike aircraft, a move which would have repercussions in a later war...Although too late to play an active role in WWI, the Cuckoo was one of the first true examples of its kind, the effectiveness of such aircraft being more than amply demonstrated in following years.
