FARNBOROUGH'S FABULOUS FIGHTER!
ONE of the most popular of Wingnut Wings' early single seat fighter kits, the SE5a was never re-issued in other boxings, although at least one Viper-powered version was planned and also a Home Defence nightfighter variant. Sadly, these kits never materialised, but the original kit is more than enough being a superb production: typically WNW with superbly-detailed parts, plenty of internal and cockpit detail; a fully-appointed engine; accurate outlines overall and generous selection of markings on an expansive Cartograf -printed decal sheet. Our SE5a is in near perfect condition with re-bagged runners and comes with some great extras including a combined set of HGW detail parts for the kit, together with a scanned copy of our exclusive build log from WS Vol.25, No.2 which is now no longer generally available.

OF less complexity than the three WWI two-seaters Wingnut Wings unleashed concurrently to an unprepared public in 2009, the RAF SE5a fighter contained many highly-detailed and accurate parts spread over three large frames along with two others providing the exquisite geared 200-hp Hispano Suiza powerplant and transparencies that include various illumination and inspection panels alongside two styles of windscreen. The inclusion of alternative fuselage halves was a welcome surprise-one with flat fabric side panels, the other realistically wrinkled, often a result of unstitching, removal or replacement, and re-stitching in service. Realistic rib details overall, comprehensive and replete cockpit interior, all typical hallmarks of the entire WNW canon, are well in evidence and a top-class instruction manual leaves little room for assembly headaches. Ronny Bar's superb artwork provides ultimate painting guides for five options the decal sheet provides: B'574 of No.84 Squadron RFC; B603 [an attractively-marked training machine]; C1057 of No.24; D351 of the 6th TS Australian Flying Corps and the iconic D3540 flown by Captain G H Lewis 'The Artful Dodger' in No.40 Squadron, RAF 1918. If the scheme looks familiar, it's because the same aircraft was featured on the cover of our SE5A Special by Brian Knight's evocative artwork.
Our WNW SE is in almost mint order, although the original cellophane bags, missing from this previously-owned kit have been replaced by polythene versions. Kitset 32003 formed the subject of a detailed build-log in the Vol.25, No.2 edition of WINDSOCK Worldwide, published in March/April 2009 and long since unavailable despite a second imprint. Scanned pages from the original article are included for those who don't have access to a copy of the magazine.
EXTRAS: Also in the box is a mint HGW Super Detail 132036 set specifically designed for the WNW kit comprising all the separate add-on releases in PE, printed fabric, clear film and decal materials, viz: two comprehensively-packed PE sets with nose panels; radiator grilles; radiator shutters; inspection panels; cockpit and MG details plus exhaust pipe brackets and much else. Plus coloured seat belts and PE hardware with wood-grained decal sections,two being deigned to fit the control panel. Full instruction assembly diagrams are supplied along with masks for clear parts and wheel disc covers.
*NB: Fuselage under-shield [Part A24] has been carefully excised from its runner and separately bagged. Due to the angle it presented, and extra materials bulking up the box, it would have been compromised when the lid was pressed down...
