LATE WAR TRIUMVERATE!
THESE were the final set of three 1:72 scale WWI aeroplane kits from Revell first released in 1966 and frequently re-issued thereafter. Our collection of 'Group 4' kits are the US versions with Jack Lynnwood's great box art although the instructions are copyrighted Revell GB. All three kits' contents are mint, but while two of the boxes are somewhat crumpled in places, this does not detract from Jack's fine brushwork. Each include the trademark Revell stands...
* The Fokker Triplane is moulded in light grey and comes with a choice of markings for Werner and Manfred-who else? This is a generally accurate miniature of the fabled triplane and just requires some cleaning up, reduction of heavily- moulded wing rib detail and refinement of the smaller items. Wing tip skids are moulded into the lower wing...
* The Nieuport 28 is moulded in pale grey and remains one of the best Revell WWI kits in their 1:72 scale range-what a pity no further such kits were forthcoming after this last batch. Another great kit and ours includes an extra two sets of AEF AS markings from a much more recent version.
*The Sopwith Triplane is moulded in light sand colour plastic and includes the large-area horizontal tailplane that extends the number of colour schemes applicable. To that end there's an extra decal sheet with a colourful alternative to the kit's rather bland choice.
All three kits have been checked for completeness and their parts have been re-bagged to prevent loss and are sold together as a set. H-652, FOKKER DR-1 TRIPLANE
As with all these American boxings, the artwork was by Jack Leynnwood, this one depicting Voss's F.I 103/17, one of two decal options in the kit; the other being the equally inevitable DR.I 152/17.Containing 29 parts [including the stand] in pale grey, the kit featured asymmetric ailerons and somewhat heavy wing ribs that need some light sanding to reduce them. Fuselage halves are modified from the initial mouldings correcting the turtledeck and plywood side fairings. The only retrograde step was Revell's revised wheel treatment with one-piece 'snap-on' wheels. Not only did this usually cause assembly problems, but the inner surfaces were plain with no tyre detail whatsoever and making them tricky to paint-all three kits featured this anomaly.
H-653, NIEUPORT 28
One of the very best of the entire 12-kit series, this 26-part gem is generally accurate, bears convincing surface detail and easy to assemble thanks to the linked struts. Apart from the wheels, the only real concern is the cowling which is too angular-easily sanded to shape,and solid cooling slot-easily drilled out. Many superb examples have been built from this kit and one formed a detailed six page feature by Alberto Casirati in WINDSOCK International Vol.15, No.1,1999 currently available in store. Our kit is mint and includes the stand plus original decal sheet for Lt. Douglas Campbell's N1690 'No.10' of the 94th Aero Squadron in 1918.
EXTRAS! Our kit has two sheets from the 2008 Revell GmbH re-issue with markings for Eddie Rickenbacker's famous No.12 complete with the two Liberty Bond wing posters-and seat belts!
H-654,SOPWITH TRIPLANE
FINE little kit of the Sopwith Triplane that served so successfully with RNAS units in France for the nimble Sopwith was a sprightly opponent in the right hands. Revell's kit is pretty good with generally accurate outlines and realistic surface detail. Fuselage lacks the true quilted effect of the forward fuselage battens but does include the exhaust channel behind the engine as a separate part. Our kit appears to be the 1980 re-pop with the large-area tailplane making this example even more collectible. Decals offer markings for N5454 'No.1' with double white fuselage bands at variance with the box top art and instruction sheet depicting a Naval 10 'Tripehound' with black cowling and wheels.
EXTRA; the model includes an excellent alternative decal set from the Revell Germany 2008 re-issue with full markings for N5493 'BLYMP' that includes 'Lift Here' legends, separate red roundel spots, inspection 'windows' and seat harness.
