1:72 AIRFIX SPAD VII, (129)1967
OLD CHARLIE!
Guynemer's fabled SPAD VII immortalised in 1:72 scale by Airfix in their 1967 kit 129. It builds into an accurate representation of the classic French fighter in 29 parts moulded in beige-colours varied-with realistic surface detail on fuselage halves. Wing ribs are somewhat over-emphasised but can be sanded back. Our example is complete, with plastic content in near-mint condition and includes an extra main-plane pre-sanded to remove ribs ready for paint and decal tapes. Three decal sheets include one from a later issue. Colour schemes for these SPADS are legion-the type serving in British; Belgian; Russian and Italian units as well as its native France offering multiple choice of finish.
**CONTAINS EXTRA PARTS & DECALS!
THUS far the only WWI French aircraft kit by Airfix is their SPAD VII comprising 29 parts, this one moulded in dark khaki-other ,lighter, colours are available... It includes a tiny wrap-round windscreen transparency-a neat touch. The model scores highly as regards outline accuracy when compared to recently-published drawings with minor wing tip anomalies easily cured by gentle sanding and this applies to tail-plane parts. Fuselage halves are a fraction over-long and bear an integrally moulded fin/rudder, the latter requiring a very small outline correction of the tip. Surface detail is mainly well done although wing and tail rib detail is excessive to the extent of assuming an almost corrugated appearance. This can be sanded down and fine decal strips applied after painting. We have included a spare wing thus pared to give you a start-not illustrated. Exhaust pipes are individually moulded as is the under nose louvered panel and plain early style radiator cowl with plain mesh screen-no ventilating shutters. Only the struts let the side down being fairly thick not helped by the heavy upper tie-bars.
Decals unsurprisingly feature Guynemer's Vieux Charles S113 with black outline-shadowed red 2 numerals on upper wing panels and fuselage along with the Cigognes emblem in red and white. Our kit is in VGC although the paper header with the evocative Roy Cross artwork is creased in places. There's an extra decal sheet from the 01081 reissue with authentic markings for S254 that includes the red pennant for the headrest fairing.(Some spare parts and a duplicate decal sheet from a second kit are included).
