SEA-GOING SOPWITH!

Released in 1957, the Airfix Sopwith Camel represented the 2F.1 'Ship's Camel' with single Vickers gun ahead of the pilot and an over-wing Lewis. Accurate, with reasonably realistic surface detail, this venerable model kit contain just 26 parts and requires only minimal modification to enhance it further. Wing and centre-section struts are quite fine and setting up the wings could prove tricky as as the instruction's stagger sketch is that of the Fokker Triplane! Markings feature Culley's famous N6812 which he flew off a towed platform on 10 August 1918 to destroy Zeppelin L53 over the North Sea. Our early kit is in VCG aside from yellowing decals an slightly creased header.

*CONTAINS EXTRA DECALS!

IT was inevitable that a Sopwith Camel would appear in early Airfix ranges and their 1957 kit represented the 2F.1 'Ship's Camel'- a choice dictated by access to the original specimen hanging from the rafters of IWM Lambeth and since restored by Skysport. With 26 silver grey parts it presented an accurate model of the 'Navalised' 2F.1 with realistic-if robust-surface detail applied to wings and tail as well as fuselage halves even if stitching was applied to both sides...Struts were finely-sectioned and the delicate wheels with subtle spoke detail were in stark contrast to the chunky airscrew and combined engine/cowling moulding. Main component outlines accord closely to Mick Davis' 2015 scale drawings in CENTENARY DATAFILE 170 other than wings being slightly over-span. Otherwise mild re-profiling to match the plans is all that's required. Decals provide roundels  and serial for Lieutenant Stuart Culley's N8612 lacking only the elevator striping typical for Beardmore-built aircraft.Plastic content is in VCG although original decals have yellowed so as a bonus we have provided Blue Rider BR 103 sheet from 1989 that presents three alternatives.
