1:72 AIRFIX AVRO 504K (128),1967
AN ADMIRABLE AVRO!
Airfix have produced a number of famous RAF trainers over the years:Tiger Moth; Harvard; Chipmunk et al and their 504K is a worthy addition to the canon. 37 well-moulded parts build into an authentic model of this famous design which was built in great numbers and during a long career served as night-fighters; light bombers and floatplanes, whilst it enjoyed extensive civilian life after WWI. This is an excellent example of the first 1967 production run and includes a choice of markings on its large decal sheet. The kit has been reissued several times over the years with new decals -including ER1772 in overall aluminium finish- which has been re-introduced this year in the popular Airfix 'Vintage Classics' ranges.
ONE of the most well-known of early British training aircraft, the Avro 504K took its time entering the Airfix 1:72 scale Series 1 range but in 1967 they finally added it to their catalogue. Containing over three dozen parts in pale cream it is exceptionally well detailed and accurate aside from fuselage halves that are 4mm short and slightly shallow aft of the lower wing's trailing edges:nothing that a few slices of plastic card and some sanding can't address. Wing and tail rib stations are a little exaggerated on their uppersurfaces but not difficult to overcome. All smaller items: wing and tail struts; undercarriage unit with large central skid nd oleos are finely-moulded as is the tiny Le Rhone rotary. Purists will wish to thin down cowling lips, add lower wing hoops from HSP or wire and carefully-apply rigging to enhance this fine model even further.
Larger than average decal sheet offers a choice of trainers: AFC F9753 with PC10 uppersurfaces and RAF F4342 in a similar scheme but with plain CDL fuselage sides. Both are beautifully illustrated by Roy Cross on a paper header which is slightly creased in places. Most parts remain on their runners and being from the first production runs the kit includes replacement AFC white serials accompanied by an explanatory addenda slip. All parts are in mint condition-one only.
