THE recently-released 1:48 scale Bristol Bulldog kits from Airfix have really raised the bar for vintage aircraft subjects with their overall accuraccy; finely-moulded details, extensive cockpit details and sublime engine components. With three choices of RAF Squadron aircraft, fully annotated instruction leaflet plus colour drawings and rigging diagrams, it could hardly be better! Our kit is as-new with all parts re-bagged and containing some classic Bulldog references in the box -all supplied as free bonus items!

BARE-BONES BABY!

FOR  a modelling challenge of a quite different kind the AJP Maquette 1:48 Nieuport 11 Bebe released in 1996 certainly ticked all the boxes. Major parts were presented in skeletal form on a large sheet of etched brass that required carefully completed sub-assemblies for covering in the pale linen-coloured tissue paper provided. We found that the humble Pritt Stick was best for adhering the tissue to the brass frames but it requires care when doing so. None of the AJP kits include decals and so we have provided a spare sheet from an old SMER kit which should prove suitable for this model although the tissue will require pre-varnishing. All content is complete and in good condition but the flimsy box has required some slight reinforcement in places. This rare kit is now considered highly collectable...

BLACK IN STOCK!

LATEST outing for the original Aurora 1:43rd scale Fokker Triplane is from Atlantis Models of the USA who recently purchased the 1975-dated moulds to present this reissue in black plastic and new decals within a small but beautifully-formed box! The kit contains 26 parts and although the hunched pilot figure is still included, the 1957 original's mechanic and ground base is not. The mouldings are surprisingly crisp with hardly a trace of flash which considering the age of the moulds is commendable. Less so the decal sheet that provides markings for Jacobs and von Richthofen but although well printed, is incomplete and contentious with bogus white serials and Balkenkreuze only really suitable for the red one... Attractively packaged it's very much worthy of a completist collectors' attention and still builds into a good-looking DR.I with a few modifications-and if you don't like the 'fabric texture' overall, then a few coats of paint should do the trick! 

LATTICE TAIL IN QUARTER SCALE!

CSM injection-moulded Caudron G.IV, impeccably moulded and packaged with plenty of PE detail items and comprehensive decal sheet covering a quartet of late version French service machines. All frames remain intact within their original plastic bags and aside from one repaired box corner  the kit offered is absolutely mint as purchased. One only.

STAR-SPANGLED SPAD!

Mint example of the superb Dragon SPAD 13 kit 5902 in colourful post-war 'Showbird ' decor released in 1992 and which includes an excellent PE sheet of details and thin wire for rigging.  2016 Eduard release of their classic Albatros D.III re-issued as a 'vanilla' Weekend Edition sans any PE items-just pure plastic and a reduced two-option decal sheet.Plenty of internal detail including a full Mercedes, the two runners also include optional rudder and main-plane configurations. Accurate overall with subtle and convincing  surface detail this is Eduard on their very best behaviour. Decals feature two perennial favourites flown by two leading  aces of WWI -one Albatros being red overall, the other bearing three red hearts... An extra bonus is a mint sheet of 1995 AeroMaster decals with a pair of colourful D.III fighters supported by two D.Va subjects.* One of the former offers a an OAW -built Albatros of Jasta 49 so now you can make use of that alternative rudder in the kit! SEEING DOUBLE!

Two-in-one ''Dual Combo'' set with a pair of mint Eduard MA Pfalz D.III kits from 1996! Excellent crisply-moulded parts with PE details  and a sharply-printed decal sheet offering authentic markings for Jasta 15 and Jasta 22 Pfalzen. One of Eduard's 'Flying Circus' series from the era, this 1:48 scale kit (8005) was reviewed in the Volume 13, No.3, May/June issue of WINDSOCK International  where it was rightly praised. All contents of both kits packed in the single box are in their original unopened polybags.

MUNIFICENT MORANE!

ONE of several upgrades to earlier Eduard 1:48 WWI kits was this Flashback re-pop of 1998 with all-new resin parts and additional photo-etched sheets-three being included*. A fully detailed instruction sheet presents invaluable rigging diagrams and multi-view painting layouts for the three decal choices on offer. The original 1994 Eduard plastic parts have not been refreshed-there being little reason to given they were accurate and well detailed in the first place. For the Type I variant the wing trailing edges were usually of piano wire and it's a simple enough matter to carefully recreate the distinctive 'scalloping ' between each rib position by careful sanding.

**Bonus items include a four page plans feature reprinted from  the November 1972 edition of Scale Models  and better yet, a 1:48 scale pair of completely scratch-built and painted spoked wheels made by Harry himself back in  the day!

PIONEER US FIGHTER!

MADE famous by emerging American aces in 1918, the Nieuport 28 was a step-up from the French company's previous 'Vee-strutter'  sesquiplane designs and performed well in service despite an un-nerving tendency to shred fabric from its wings! Post Armistice saw many surplus Nieuports employed by Hollywood studios for various celluloid epics such as The Dawn Patrol-twice!-and others. Glencoe revamped the old Aurora kit  during 1995 in attractive new boxing  that included a sparkling Scale Master decal sheet bearing six colourful options. Happily, most all the original embossed markings had been excised from the mouldings. Our example of the kit  is complete with all 34 parts in very good condition-as are the decals- everything being as sharp and complete as when the kit was first released. 

SILVER HAWK!

This is an early 22-piece Nieuport 17 from the pioneering Hawk Model Co. of Illinois and one of the best WWI plastic aircraft kits of the 1950s period. This mint example is moulded in silver and boasts accurate outlines in most every respect other than  lower wing tips that require attention. It's a simple model with a partial Le Rhone engine forming part of the cowling moulding; rudder and tail skid are integral to the fuselage halves and the etched decal positions will need removal along with the Hawk registered legend on lower wing! All struts are finer than most-but the rear Vee strut forward of the cockpit needs to be created in lieu of the separate vertical versions offered. If skinning the fuselage sides to disguise the stringer detail, the plastic card should be devoid of detail -the vertical spacers only become apparent in flight as the fabric was pulled in-see page 6 of Nieuport Fighters Vol.1...Decals provide RFC markings combined with a Lafayette Indian head motif-somewhat confusingly-so we have included a 1998 sheet of Guynemer's markings from one of the Eduard Nieuports. Condition of this Hawk kit's content, decals and box belies its venerable age-it almost looks brand new!

AN EARLY BIRD

History has not uncovered the exact year that Hawk released their pioneering 1:48 plastic SPAD and Nieuport models but it was around the early to mid 1950s and almost certainly predating the first Aurora releases. Considering its age, the SPAD is surprisingly good with pin-sharp wing and tail trailing edges; mostly accurate outlines and bearing reasonable surface detail-etched decals placement guides notwithstanding. Hawk's SPAD represents an early version with rounded wing tips and despite overcooked cut-outs, the wing treatment is a lot better than average with finely-raised rib lines that can be softly sanded to create taping. Fuselage is slightly over-length but tail-plane parts are exact and razor sharp although the struts are two-dimensional with flat edges-a carry over from Hawk's previous balsa wood days Likewise the airscrew is secured with a pin that's looking a little rusty now1 Our kit has remained in good condition even the decals-from a later kit-look viable and all original 28 parts are present and correct. The cut-out-and-keep box art, whilst certainly dramatic, is a little mixed-up with the SPAD depicted more akin to the earlier S.VII in its overall clear-doped and Ecru finish with  French roundels that don't sit right with Eddie Rickenbacker's signature fuselage markings!

 AN HANDSOME HANRIOT!

Produced in France by JMGT*, this is a high-quality resin kit of the Hanriot HD.1 fighter biplane that served so well in Belgian and Italian air units during WWI. This detailed and accurate model (a fully upgraded version of a previous release) also includes white metal and photo-etched parts, vac-form cowlings and windscreens, plus two decal sheets offering a choice of seven colourful examples. VGC.

AN HANRIOT FOR THE MATELOTS!

Based upon the earlier JMGT HD.I kit with extra parts and all new decals,this is the HD.2 floatplane version of Dupont's classic WWI design*. Comes with a great decal sheet offering no less than nine colourful variants- all detailed in the instructions. Some minor 'repair' work is required on a couple of pieces but otherwise the kit is in VGC.

BOEING! BOEING!

The stubby Boeing F4B-4 was designed for the US Navy and the first example was delivered in July 1923. Seven first-line units were equipped with the type to serve on five carriers: Enterprise; Langley; Lexington; Ranger and Saratoga. The particular K & B example available here is a 1972 re-issue of the original Aurora kit from 1957 and contains 31 parts moulded in grey styrene-including a transparent windscreen. Good surface detail overall but some parts will require a little thinning, but at least there are none of those pesky embossed markings' positions! The contents, including a typically colourful decal sheet, are virtually mint although the box has been put through the wringer at some point! We have attempted to restore it to a more presentable condition using period -style materials.

 K & B KIT NO. 1135-170, FOKKER E.V

ONE of a dozen Aurora Collector's Series re-issues, the renamed Fokker E.V was moulded in light grey with the customary accessories in black. Our kit is in very good condition with all original 30 parts, most fallen from their 'trees' so have been secured in several zip-lock bags. Experienced WWI modellers will be familiar with the kit's several flaws,notably the undernourished wing although its square off tips closely match the Frankfurt Kruck Company  experimental stress test wing illustrated on page 30 of DATAFILE 25. Ian Stair's drawings on centre pages also reveal the tailplane's missing forward cut-out and slightly shortened fuselage which can be corrected. Decals represent Polish example 001 flown by Pol.pil. Stefan Stec in April 1919 and looks to be in fair condition. The attractive box artwork shows his E.V with solid green uppersurfaces and pale blue beneath although these ex-German monoplanes retained their original factory finish of printed fabric areas and stained ply wings in four colours applied strie style. As a bonus our kit includes sufficient  four- and five-colour 'lozenge' decal strips in 1:48 scale to aid modellers seeking  a more authentic finish for these aircraft in post -WWI Polish service. 

 K&B KIT NO.1126-1-97-GOTHA G.V.

MODEST overhaul of Aurora's original 1958 126-1-98, the K&B reissue formed part of their 'Collectors Series' which typically featured new decals and a box-filling vacformed ground base of dubious value all packed within large attractive boxes showcasing stunning artwork by John Amendola. The Gotha contains 66 deep blue parts with 51 'accessories' on black runners-the original kit's five figures are also included but not the groundbase with its chocks. Despite the opprobrium heaped upon the original kit since first release, it became the holy grail of kit collecting in the 1960s prompting a private enthusiast to collaborate with Aurora issuing 1000 'replica' kits at bargain prices. The following year Aurora relaunched the kit themselves with some minor revisions. Comparing the kit's major components with latter-day scale plans shows them to be tolerably accurate in scale and outline providing a sound platform to build on whilst refining chunkier aspects.  Inaccurate bombs and incorrectly- shaped engine 'power eggs' are the main failings, the latter proving a challenge of re-modelling. Our kit includes 1:48 scale drawings of the nacelles for adventurous  modellers wishing to make their own... Decals provide both styles of national insignia with only the eiserne kreuze matching embossed wing and rudder positions... 

'THE HUNTER'!

This excellent  all-resin kit from Poland's Karaya was their very first 1:48 scale WWI kit and it's a good one! With PE parts and a multi subject decal choice spread over four sheets, this is a really super kit of the Italian Ansaldo A.I Balilla fighter biplane so popular with  enthusiasts and model manufacturers. This excellent production was reviewed in WINDSOCK International Vol.21, No.2, March/April 2005- copies of which are available from stock-please see the link below...

A FAST BERG!

This unusual sesquiplane was never designed to replace the famous Aviatik D.I but as an experiment to increase performance. Results were excellent but the type never entered wholesale production and just 16 were built and assigned to Flik 61J. The superb Karaya resin kit was released in 2005* and is all-resin, the quality and finesse of the parts being top class. We have just one example in near-mint order.

THE LINDBERG LINE!

Original 1965 boxed 1:48 scale SE5A kit in glorious vivid yellow plastic! Includes tailskid dolly; mechanic figure, wheel chocks and a three piece engine with separate exhausts.Original clear stand is included along with instruction leaflet and a decal sheet that has admittedly fallen victim to ageing. Otherwise the kit is in very good condition. One only.

JEWEL OF A JENNY!

EASILY the finest 1:48 scale WWI plastic aeroplane kit of its day, the Lindberg Curtiss JN-4 Jenny was in a class of its own and we have this mint example of the 1995 reissue with its eye-catching box art and a new decal sheet that offers an albino ambulance version from WWI and a post-war USN JN-4 in silver and chrome yellow -both making attractive alternatives to the usual Army livery. The kit is moulded in silver grey and includes a spare set of clear windshields and ex-Aurora groundcrew to use with the tail skid wheeled dolly the kit does provide. This re-issue  includes a generous length of steel wire for rigging the completed model and also comes with a vintage copy of The CAHS Journal  that features some great references for RFC/RAF Canada training Jennies.

LE DIABLE ROUGE!

MERIT's 1956 copy of an Aurora Series B original, the 'Albatros D.III Scout' comprised 29 parts and our example is vivid red although others could be found moulded in dark green. This 1:46/1:48 scale kit has a number of issues including an over-corpulent fuselage that more closely resembles  D.V/D.Va variants and too deep even for them. Parts are actually crisper than Aurora's and fuselage detail is more refined. Originally, our kit was missing the miniscule gunsight, pilot and intake manifold. These have all been reinstated from other kits, which explains the black and grey parts shown. Scale outlines of most other parts are OK but the fin/rudder are undersize and to represent later types will need replacing along with the tailskid. Decals are basic and probably unusable so a more recent Smer sheet is provided with Werner Voss' well-known markings. Our kit contains  missing parts slip and a fascinating mini catalogue of  Merit's kit ranges which included a diversity of cars and marine subjects as well as aircraft.  

AN AVRO OF MERIT!

RELEASED in 1956 by Merit, this excellent 1:48 scale kit of the classic British Avro 504K training aircraft was a welcome addition to their range, one of several home-grown subjects the Potters Bar firm produced. Kit 4745 was moulded in a buff colour in at least two shades and sometimes a bright yellow. It was accurate in outline, bore convincing surface detail and easy to assemble thanks to a first-class instruction leaflet and good fit of parts. This pre-owned example is complete with all original 37 pieces accounted for despite having been detached from their 'sprue trees' at some point. The box is in reasonable condition with several worn areas and minor tears and unavoidably yellowed with age.An end label has been recreated in correct style as the original was quite degraded. Extras include a CSM Clerget in white metal and PE British instruments, plus a virtually complete ex-Smer decal sheet with British and Australian trainer options. Only the 'Auroraesque' etched markings 'despoil' what many consider to be Merit's finest addition to their range.

PUSHING IT!  

ONE of Merit's very own in-house productions extended their 1:48 scale series and one of their best-embossed markings notwithstanding Moulded in dark green, outlines of all main parts require only minimal correction: wing ribs are on both surfaces and once the engraved roundels are erased the wings will require thinning. Surface detail elsewhere is presentable and the Monosoupape engine rotates in sync with its propeller but those big wheels will need replacing! Nevertheless, with some refining overall and a few added details the kit has a lot to offer. Plastic content of our example is mint although we cannot guarantee the decals will remain intact once immersed so an alternative, an ex-Smer DH2 sheet, is supplied. Also included, a number of parts from a spare kit which may prove useful in case of damage or loss: even an original phial of polystyrene cement is here but it's rock-hard!

THE GREEN FOKKER!

The 1957 Merit Fokker D-7 was a knock off copy of Aurora's Kit 106 also released during that same year. It's pretty much identical, but  Merit instruction leaflets were generally superior with more informed histories, better colour notes where necessary and useful rigging sketches where appropriate. Although closer  to 1:46 than the 1:48, the kit is a reasonably good effort although the overscale struts and suspect wing sections wil demand attention. All 34 original parts are in VGC,complete with loose items individually bagged within the original flimsy cellophane and paper wrap that came with the kit. The printed identification label at the end of the box has been specially recreated, the original strip having been ripped off long ago. Retailing for just slightly more than their Aurora equivalents at the time-about five shillings and eleven pence-the D-7 and others in the range remained popular despite their unimaginative boxes...

THE ROCKETEER! 

THIS is Merit's 1956 Nieuport 11  a pirate copy of  Aurora's original Bebe and contains 35 parts  moulded in a deep beige. Several parts-wings and fuselage-are slightly overscale whilst most others are true 1:48 just like the American original. Equipped with eight strut-mounted Le Prieur rockets, the kit builds into a presentable miniature as most all major outlines are accurate and only needs minor adjustment.  Apart from the careworn box, our example is in very good condition and everything is enclosed in the original paper/cellophane sheath with a replacement central Vee strut to replace the severed part. This, and other loose parts, have been bagged up to prevent loss. Decals are the same as Aurora's-N1354 of the Lafayette Escadrille  and well past their sell-by date. Extras include: Aurora black-moulded prop shaft; Lewis gun; engine and a pair of wheels that will prove useful replacements since Merit have embossed trademarks on theirs! 

SILVER SCOUT!

ANOTHER Aurora clone, the  Merit S.E.5A-SCOUT has been subject od more copies and more re-issues from many manufacturesr down the years than any other WWI kit subject-and it still goes on. Quite why is a bafflement but we have several examples available and this 1956 Merit version is mint and contains 30 parts. Moulded in pale green , it is cleanly moulded with barely any flash. Outlines of wings and tailplane halves are good but the fuselage is overlong, near to 1:46 scale,although the integraly-moulded fin and rudder are to scale. No rib detail under wing or tail surfaces, these easily suggested by contrasting decal tapes over a CDL finish.Nose contours are reminiscent of the earlier SE5 but with a little ingenuity and plastic card either version could be built from the kit with relative ease. Decals provide Aurora's mixed take on McCudden's No.6 and are showing their age. So we've included a more recent replacement from a 2002 Revell/Monogram re-issue with RAF and USAS markings.

CANARY-COLOURED CAMEL!

Many vintage kit boxes, instructions and decals yellow with age over time but in the case of Merit's Sopwith Camel it was yellow from the very outset! Inexplicably, this copy of Aurora kit 102 was moulded in the same bright hue as Merit's own Tiger Moth and, for some production runs, their Avro 504K too. With all its 30 parts accounted for, the Camel offered here is well preserved with original transfers for B7270 sans red/white striping and fuselage markings for No.209 Squadron RAF. The scale is closer to 1:45 than it is to 1:48 and mirrors the Aurora kit's original mainplane with enlarged centre-section cut-out that requires some structure added, and the asymmetric cockpit opening. Neither is inaccurate but these features were not universal and certainly inappropriate for the subject aircraft. Other than lacking the usual glue capsule, aside from a recreated box label, the kit remains as purchased in the 1960's down to the trademark paper-backed cellophane wrapping of the content.

I AM THE WALRUS!

ONE of Merit's larger 1:48 scale kits, and one they produced themselves rather than being a knock-off, their 1956 Supermarine Walrus was, for its day, a good model. Some cabin interior detail is provided which is worth working up as the transparent cabin is so crisp and clear. Wing and tail rib detail is well represented and  neatly recessed hull rivets lend themselves to weathering wash techniques. Outlines are fairly accurate and assembly eased by the struts' linked tie-bar and slot assembly. Because the original decals are somewhat aged, we have included a much more recent alternative from Classic Airframes with four diverse subjects. Full wingwalk stencils are provided along with detailed camouflage drawings showing accurate uppersurface patterns. Kit contents themselves are complete in very good condition with any loose parts segregated within polybags. Detailed instruction leaflet offers exploded assembly diagrams and vital rigging sketches. It may have been surpassed in recent years by Airfix but the pioneering Merit 'Shagbat' still has plenty to offer adventurous modellers!

IT'S RED OF COURSE!

Yet another outing for the venerable Merit Fokker Triplane and this version hails from Poland under the Mistercraft Hobby Kits label and moulded in bright red-what else? The plastic is of good quality with barely any flash so full marks to Mistercraft for the clean-up. High points are  the decal options with the inevitable 425/17 but at least some attempt at reproducing the overpainted crosses has been made. Raben's red/white Raven is another popular choice but the third is more interesting. The captured DR.I 212/17 in French markings would make a neat model if its unique features were replicated and five-colour camouflage applied. We have two of these kits left and both are in mint condition.

'GROUND-POUNDER'!

Bell's extraordinary P-39 Airacobra was used to deadly effect for ground strafing and 'tank busting' by American and Russian pilots during the Second World War. Several variants were developed and the kit includes sufficient parts to create either fighter; fighter bomber or ground attack versions. Crystal-clear transparencies include an unobtrusive 'tail-prop' for the rear fuselage to balance the model on all three wheels without recourse to nose weights. The box is somewhat careworn but all contents are complete and in VGC. Includes a rare Eduard MA PE detail set designed specifically for this kit.

A  REAL SCALE(Y) MODEL!

1:48 scale Renwal Aero-CURTISS HEDDON JENNY in the dramatic fish-inspired  barnstorming colours of  Frank Hawks. Box is a bit battered but contents are complete with full Aero-Skin panels and a bottle of weapons-grade Testors liquid cement...face mask included!

EDELWEISS! EDELWEISS!

From 2010 comes Revell's re-issue of the classic Eduard 1:48 scale Albatros D.V which has been re-boxed by the Czech parent company multiple times over the years since it was first introduced in 1995. This example is mint, aside from the slightly worn-edged box, but is complete with the original Revell decals. These offer the black-fuselaged D.V flown by Ltn. Otto Kissenberth in Jasta 16b bearing the large Edelweiss marking that also adorned his Pfalz and Roland fighters. Udet's D.V from Jasta 37 -inevitably monogrammed 'Lo'- is the other option with  diagonal tail striping on both surfaces being provided. This attractive Revell re-pop also comes with an extra three sets of after-market decal sheets for The D.V and D.Va as well as a few for the earlier D.III version-also by Eduard, and also on the shop. Over 10 different aircraft feature on these exclusive extras!

MIXED DOGFIGHT

Here is a 'dogfight double' in 1:48 from SMER which contains  'strange bed fellows' combining an old Aurora/Merit Albatros of yore with the much more recent Eduard Sopwith Triplane*. It's a mismatch in several ways of course but it it does come with new decals and the 'Tripehound' is a welcome inclusion as the original kit is now somewhat scarce. The decals feature a well-known Jasta 5 D.III with the Bavarian diamonds emblazoned on the fin and rudder, whilst the Triplane selected is N6290 of Naval 8 in 1917. It provides the wing and fuselage bands and a stab at the fuselage Dixie II legend  which has been misinterpreted as Dixie Lee...The sheet is well-printed however with detailed colour views and Humbrol paint codes under the box. Contents are in mint condition.

TORA! TORA! TORA!

The infamous Japanese Zero was immortalized in 1:48 scale by Tamiya in their excellent 1973 release. Content of our kit is near-mint,although the box is a little creased in places. All parts remain on their runners with just a few being detached and being zip-locked bagged for protection. Fabulous decals offer five subjects with accompanying colour notes forming a crucial element of the instruction sheet.

Ansaldo's Balilla is immortalized by Poland's Techmod by their stunning 1:48 scale kit combining injection-moulded plastic with 3D printed parts. The latter are superb, down to the ultra-fine matrix and emblem on the radiator front to delicate spoked wheels and a plethora of cockpit parts also. This is a mint example and provides comprehensive instruction diagrams and multi-view colour profiles illustrating the five options that are printed on a quite spectacular decal sheet. One of the finest 1:48 scale models of this classic Italian WWI fighter ever kitted.

Testors' re-imagining of  Hawk's venerable 1950's Nieuport 17 C.1 speaks volumes for the overall quality of the original tool-making for it barely reveals its true age. Surface detail of fuselage halves is greatly improved and a redesigned airscrew now has a proper shaft as opposed to the original's    dress-maker's pin! This is a great kit to build, with less than two dozen parts, overhauled instructions and accurate painting guides that make it an ideal introduction to modelling 1:48 scale WWI aircraft kits. Superb new decals and a resin figure of a typical French aviator complete this rejuvenated classic!
