1:32 RODEN SOPWITH 1 1/2 STRUTTER *(635)
LAND CLERGET TRACTOR!
The first Sopwith Strutter kit by Roden of the Ukraine was released in 2023 and streets ahead of most others in their 1:32 scale series. The Sopwith two-seater is an impressive production with plenty of authentic cockpit details, crisp Clerget and twin gun armament as well as a number of unused bombs for upcoming kits. Two main-planes as supplied, one with solid centre-section, the other with generous cut-outs for which thin acetate panels are provided. The kit is mint and comes with extra decals; engine frame; used Profile No.121, plus a xerox copy of the original 1917 T.5 technical rigging notes with airframe sketches, annotated drawings and RAFwire diagram with all wire gauges and lengths specified. Although our first Strutter DATAFILE has sold out we still have copies of Volume 2 in store that covers single seat variants including the Comic night-fighter conversion for which photos and drawings are featured. These will be of pertinent interest to any modellers building Roden's second Strutter release (637) currently available.
THIS is the first of several planned 1:32 scale Sopwith Strutters released by Roden and one of the best in their popular large-scale WWI range. It's certainly a boxful and builds into an accurate, well-detailed model of the two-seat fighter version and contains dozens of parts spread over ten frames with many authentic interior fittings and cockpit details. There are two main-planes:one with a solid centre-section,the other with generous central cut-outs.All flying and control surfaces bear subtle wing rib detail on top but barely defined beneath so some painted decal strips will be required. Fuselage halves bear all the usual Sopwith features: quilted lattice battens inside and out; subtle upright spacer detail and realistic stitching, while the stringered turtledeck and rear 'step' are all accurately presented. Cockpit fit includes side frames; air brake and tail-plane incidence control wheels; ammunition racks; pilot seat; gunner's stool and fuel tank. Armament is equally impressive with finely moulded Scarff ring components-both Vickers and Lewis being superior to those of previous Roden kits. There's a detailed Clerget 9; a choice of airscrews including a well-proportioned Lang LP, plus a two-piece cowling with correctly-positioned cooling slots in the lower quadrant. Separate cockpit decking is testament to future kits as is the unused bomb load, whilst air brakes on lower wing are separate and the clever undercarriage design ensures that the wheels splay out correctly thanks to dual axles.
Another commendable feature is clear acetate film doubling for the Cellon wing panels; windscreen insert and aileron pulley inspection windows. The acetate comes pre-printed to trim and fit in the recesses provide-preferable to unavoidably thickly-moulded transparencies. Try PVA glue or gloss varnish to secure them...
The large decal sheet provides markings for 9407 of No.3 Wing, RNAS as flown by FSL Raymond Collishaw circa Autumn 1915, and A995 from No. 70 Squadron RFC flown by Lt J H Gotch.
EXTRAS! We have included a spare frame of engine parts and airscrews; a used edition of Profile Publications 121 taken from a bound volume, plus a complete xerox copy of the original 1917 T.5 Technical Notes with sketches; annotated three view schematics and full RAFwire rigging drawing with all wires and cables identified and dimensioned-the ultimate reference! The kit is in mint condition throughout...
