A PRETTY SHARP RAZOR!
An ex-Avis kit, with some cosmetic improvements but which remains a fairly simple model by 1:32 scale WWI kits' standards, so investment in Aviattic's various upgrades is firmly recommended. Moulded competently, the 108 part kit includes a reasonably well-detailed interior; multi-piece Oberursel rotary engine; choice of airscrews and restrained surface detail throughout. Our example is in mint condition although the somewhat flimsy box, with its entirely imaginary art of a black/yellow striped D.VIII!, requires care when removing it from our padded postal carton! The modest decal sheet provides one set of Balkenkreuze; instrumentation; Axial logos and control cable exit reinforcement patches. For your first foray into large scale WWI model kits, this one can hardly be bettered!

IT'S unlikely that the Fokker E.V/D.VIII kits planned by Wingnut Wings will ever materialise now,but fear not as 1:32 scale kits of the late war German Parasol monoplane fighter have been issued by Avis in 2008 and, latterly, a revised set of the moulds marketed by Mikr-Mir both from beleaguered Ukraine...We have a mint example of the re-issued kit from 2017 in its flimsy box which presents an accurate 'Flying Razor' with generally convincing surface detail and a fair amount of interior pieces. These include fuselage tubular framework; seat and fabric screen; fuel tank; ammunition boxes; cockpit floor; instrument board and controls plus a 12-part Oberursel to hang off the front firewall. Rib detail on the fin; rudder; horizontal tail-plane and elevators is neatly rendered and the two-piece mainplane with its separate ailerons adopts the correct tapered profiles. Struts are finely moulded, although the four individual undercarriage legs will require careful set-up but the separated tyres and wheel shields on either side are neat touches. There's a modest PE sheet with 'Spandau' perforated cooling jackets, plus full seat harness and top decking cover over the gun positions for post-war operation. An acetate printed windscreen is provided and a well printed decal sheet offers three options with a single set of Balkenkreuze and generous selections of instrument faces; Axial airscrew logos and cable exit port reinforcement patches. Markings for Udet's post-war 'Lo!'-marked D.VIII appear on the sheet but when it comes to the colourful black and yellow machines on offer [the 'Theo Osterkamp scheme' is quite bogus by the way], Ltn. zur See Gotthard Sachsenberg's diamond-emblazoned machine will pose a few challenges as no decals are supplied for the pattern, although the instructions do provide some basic coloured side and upper planforms. There are no 'lozenge' decals either and these will need to be sourced from www.Aviattic.com who also produce some great add-ons designed for this very kit which will go a long way to achieve a truly excellent result.
Rather than all eight frames being slung together in one cellophane wrap, all our runners have been individually poly-bagged with card stiffening for decals, PE and clear film elements...
