12.HANRIOT HD.1

LAST REMAINING EDITION!

INTRODUCED in 1917, the French-designed Hanriot HD.1 would become one of Italy's most favoured fighters of the war with over 1700 being built by the Societe Nieuport-Macchi.  120 were manufactured in Belgium for their Army's air service whose pilots found the nimble biplane very much to their liking. One of the country's most successful Hanriot exponents was leading ace Willy Coppens who scored 37 victories flying various Hanriots, 26 of these being balloons....

In this rare DATAFILE Jack Bruce outlines the type's history with many archive photos and the content is further enhanced by 1:72 and 1:48 scale drawings; seven contemporary airframe sketches; complete five-colour camouflage schematic and four colour profiles by series editor Ray Rimell on outer covers. Surviving airframes are listed and there are many candid close-ups of one of these-HD.I No.75 when displayed at the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon. This Hanriot was subsequently acquired by the Vintage Aviation Ltd company in New Zealand and restored to full airworthiness. Our copy of DF12 is in near-mint condition.

MINT 1997 second edition of WIND-SOCK DATAFILE 12, originally published in 1988 and quickly selling out. Written by Jack Bruce, it is a concise 24 page study of the classic French fighter aeroplane, passed over by its native country, but which served with distinction in Belgian and Italian units during 1917 and was also  employed by the Swiss air force and US Navy after WWI. The HD.I boasted excellent flying qualities to match its undoubted aesthetics with many leading Belgian and Italian air aces notching up many scores with it. Most pilots actually preferred their Hanriot fighters to contemporary Nieuports even though both used the110-hp Le Rhone engine...

There was a more powerful variant fitted with the 130-hp Clerget that featured redesigned fin and rudder and operated in small numbers by the Aviation Maritime. The HD.2 fitted with floats and all-new tail surfaces served with the US Navy after the Armistice alongside several wheeled undercarriage conversions- both are illustrated in this early DATA-FILE. The author presents a full history with a  selection of over 30 WWI period photos of the type  reproduced to generous half page reproduction. In addition, the book includes 27 close-ups of the original rebuilt Hanriot HD.1 displayed in the RAF Museum at the time with details of cockpit areas; strut fittings; undercarriage and tail-skid. Seven airframe diagrams from a 1918 manufacturer's manual are also presented. In addition there  are detailed 1:72 and 1:48 scale drawings of both HD.1 and HD.2 variants by Ian Stair and four colour profiles on outer covers illustrate Belgian and Italian examples. Colours and markings data close the account with a six-view presentation showing the typical five -colour camouflage pattern applied to many wartime airframes.
