TINY TRAINER!
ONE of an excellent range of 1:200 scale mixed white metal and brass-etched biplane kits from Shed Models in 2011 was this petite Avro 504K. Bearing convincing rib detail on wing uppersurfaces with all struttage in flat PE format it builds into a miniature masterpiece of the iconic British WWI trainer. Superb decal sheets offer wartime markings for AFC A3.17; F2623 and H2394 in RFC service, but best of all is G-EBIZ- an overall postbox red civilian Avro operated by The Cornwall Aviation Co. Full registration letters in white for wings, fuselage and rudder are supplied to create a really-eyecatching alternative. We have just the one example and fortunately it's in mint condition...
THIS 1:200 scale white metal kit of the classic biplane trainer was released in 2011 and reviewed in the WINDSOCK Worldwide Volume 27/4, July/August edition of that year. Despite diminutive dimensions, Shed Models' Avro 504K is an authentic-looking miniature exhibiting suitably restrained surface detail and is dimensionally accurate. Struts and undercarriage 'vees' are of photo-etch and very fine indeed so it will require a steady hand to assemble the model although main parts are few-six in all. The big surprises are the tiny decal sheets that provide a choice of three wartime examples with a full set of roundels plus eye-straining serials, but best of all are the white post war civilian registrations G-EBIZ for the all-red Avro operated by the Cornwall Aviation Company. The model could be further enhanced by rigging but would prove challenging particularly in sourcing fine enough material. Unlikely to be found commercially, the dedicated enthusiast would do best with delicately stretched 'sprue'.
