(1108) NIEUPORT 28 (1972)
THE 1972 RE-ISSUE!
Aurora re-issue of their classic Nieuport 28 from 1958 with a brand new boxing, fresh decals and vacform ground base. Other than a change of colour for the main parts, plastic content was unchanged from the original other than deletion of the mechanic and ground chocks. This is one of Aurora's best kits in their 1:48 scale series with outlines according almost exactly with latter day scale plans so only minor outline adjustments are required. Overall surface detail is good with reasonably convincing fuselage stringers and upper surface wing ribs: tailplane and co-joined elevators are devoid of detail which is as it should be. Only chore is removing all the etched markings positions with their extra wing roundels-not all Nieuports carried them under their top wings and never above the lower... NB: Identical versions of the kit were generally available in the UK under the K & B label -an Aurora subsidiary.
**CONTAINS EXTRA PARTS & DECALS!
THIS reissue of Aurora's 1957 Nieuport 28 was little changed other than the main parts being moulded in tan-coloured plastic rather than the original's pale grey. This was one of the best in their second group of Series B kits with accurate outlines, reasonably convincing surface detail and finely-moulded struts, wheels and cowling-the latter only requiring cooling slots which are easily drilled out.Comparing major components with Ian Stair's 1:48 scale plans in DATAFILE 36 confirms overall accuracy with minimal adjustment to reduce lower wing tips and fin/rudder areas. The customary embossed markings are present with those on the stringered fuselage halves and ribbed upper wing surfaces being especially time-consuming to eradicate with 'extra' roundels inexplicably moulded to lower wing uppersurfaces an extra chore.Wing ribs are well represented nevertheless but lower surfaces are bereft of any such detail so will need attention. There's little else required, other than reduction of cockpit padding and replacing the simplified Vickers guns. All parts are mint and content complete including the black nameplate for the vacform base.
Decals were a distinct improvement over the originals featuring revised markings for Captain Eddie Rickenbacker's 'White 12' of the 94th AS.There are eight wing roundels-two smaller ones surplus to requirements-along with the famous'Hat in the Ring' unit insignia, additional numerals and a fair attempt at a Third Liberty Loan poster for the upper wing but nothing for the lower. Blues are somewhat pallid and could be excused as being 'faded' whilst fin/rudder stripes are printed with white leading, then blue, then red. Period photos reveal the central portion more commonly in white bearing the serial number with red leading and blue trailing:variations have been noted. There's a single 6278 serial that does not relate to this particular aircraft.
EXTRAS! Several parts left over from previous builds are included:six interplane struts;three central wing struts; dash; tailskid; cowling and mechanic plus spare decal fin/rudder stripes, numbers and 94th insignia.
NIEUPORT NOTES: Jon Guttman's DATAFILE 36 is an excellent reference source with its great selection of photos, scale plans and three rear cover profiles showcasing a trio of USAS Nieuports with cowling markings for a further six.Out of print for some time the title is now scarce. *Also, the 1965 Profile Publications No.79 written by Peter M Bowers with excellent colour profiles on inner covers. We have a limited number of these Profiles in the store-see link below...
